Johnny Depp Files a Lawsuit that Alleges Ex-wife Amber Heard Was the Abuser not the Victim
Johnny Depp is officially speaking out about his time married to Amber Heard. Depp has remained unusually quiet in the wake of the abuse allegations levied against him but now, two years after his divorce from the rising star, Depp has filed a lawsuit in Virginia. The lawsuit paints a drastically different picture of the marriage than the one the public is familiar with. In the lawsuit, Depp alleges Heard was regularly abusive. He claims the actress punched him in the face and even severed his finger during heated arguments. Before the suit, Depp was painted as the abuser rather than the victim.
What were the original allegations against Johnny Depp
Reports that Johnny Depp abused his then-wife Amber Heard first surfaced in 2016. The pair, who had been married for less than a year, had the police called to their residence, according to USA Today. Heard alleged that Depp had struck her and he was removed from the property. A judge ordered the veteran actor to stay away from Heard. Their divorce was finalized the following year.
Heard has spoken out repeatedly against Depp. She chronicled a pattern of emotional and physical abuse she claims the actor levied at her. Heard spoke at the 2018 Incredible Women Gala, reading aloud an open letter where she further chronicled the alleged abuse. The Justice League star famously donated her divorce settlement to charities that work with battered women and children, according to Variety.
Inside Johnny Depp’s $50 million lawsuit
Depp is now seeking defamation damages from Amber Heard. The Pirates of the Caribbean Star submitted a bevy of evidence that suggests his ex-wife was the perpetrator of domestic violence, not the victim.
According to Geo TV, Depp’s lawsuit includes over 80 surveillance videos, pictures and 17 witness statements. Several of the witnesses named in the lawsuit are police officers. Depp’s lawyer contends that Heard utilized the allegations against Depp to further her career.
According to Depp’s attorney, the actor has been vilified before the public and has lost out on several roles due to the allegations. Heard’s lawyer claims that the lawsuit is frivolous and just another attempt by Depp’s team to defame his client, according to Variety.
What was the catalyst that forced Depp to speak out?
Depp lawsuit comes on the heels of a newspaper article written by the Aquaman star. The December 2018 op-ed appeared in The Washington Post. The piece chronicled the alleged abuse and claims that her career was negatively impacted by speaking out against the powerful actor, now 55.
The previous year, Heard spoke out against British GQ after the publication printed an interview with Depp. In the interview, the seasoned actor defended himself and called Heard’s allegations blatantly false. Heard accused the actor of gaslighting her and breaking the non-disclosure agreement they signed when they finalized their divorce.
A judge will ultimately decide if Depp’s lawsuit has merit. No official court date has been set.
