Ryan Reynolds Plays A Different Kind of Crime Fighter in Netflix’s ‘6 Underground’
You may be used to Ryan Reynolds’s portrayal of Deadpool, but the actor is unmasked in a new role. The Michael Bay-directed feature-length film, 6 Underground, is headed to Netflix. Reynolds used his usual sarcasm on Instagram to say the film will be coming to a “mailbox near you” December 13.
What is ‘6 Underground’ about?
According to Deadline, 6 Underground “follows six individuals from all around the globe, each the very best at what they do, chosen not only for their skill but for a unique desire to delete their pasts to change the future.”
Reynolds reunited with Deadpool executive producers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. 6 Underground also stars Mélanie Laurent (Inglorious Basterds), Payman Maadi (A Separation), Corey Hawkins (BlacKkKlansman), Adria Arjona (Triple Frontier), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (Sicario: Day Of The Soldado), Ben Hardy (X-Men: Apocalypse) Lior Raz (Fauda), and Dave Franco (Now You See Me).
Bay released an Instagram clip for the trailer’s debut. He refers to 6 Underground as “a big, action, fun-flick. It’s kind of back to my old-school self.”
He added, “It’s like the movies I did way back when where it’s got real action, it’s tough, it’s funny, it’s got an interesting style to the movie. The writers, Wernick and Reese, who I’ve always wanted to work with, they’ve got a great sense of humor and there’s a great style we created for the movie.”
Who does Ryan Reynolds play in ‘6 Underground’?
So where does Reynolds come in? There aren’t a lot of details released just yet. Deadline continued saying, “The team is brought together by an enigmatic leader (Reynolds), whose sole mission in life is to ensure that, while he and his fellow operatives will never be remembered, their actions damn sure will.”
As vigilantes, the team’s only goal is to save the world. No pressure. Reynolds plays the kind of ghost whose record is scrubbed to do the secret operative work. His character is the billionaire leader of the other ghosts who are the best of the best.
“The best part of being dead is the freedom,” Reynolds says in the trailer. “No policies or politics. We answer to no one. We could take out some truly evil people.”
Reynolds captured the movie-making experience with Bay on Instagram throughout filming 6 Underground.
“The best part about shooting with Michael Bay?” he says in a clip. “I don’t know … A lot of people might say the action, but for me, it’s the stillness. Those quiet moments.”
Will ‘6 Underground’ also be on the big screen?
With Bay’s history (Transformers, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor), you’d think 6 Underground was made for theatrical release. At this point, it’s all Netflix who produced the project in collaboration with Skydance Media’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger.
According to Entertainment Weekly, 6 Underground is “the first event-level cinematic co-production between Skydance and Netflix, who have previously collaborated on TV series including Grace and Frankie and Altered Carbon.”
