‘Mulan,’ ‘Cruella,’ and ‘Disney’s Jungle Cruise’ Debuted on Disney+ With ‘Premier Access’ — Will Marvel’s ‘Shang-Chi’?
With Marvel’sShang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings scheduled for a September 2021 premiere, some fans are wondering if this Marvel film will follow a similar release format to movies like Black Widow and Disney’s Jungle Cruise.
Marvel’s ‘Black Widow’ premiered in theaters and on Disney’s streaming platform
How did Black Widow become a former Russian spy? Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, this Marvel flick’s theatrical release was postponed. Then, postponed again. Eventually, Disney decided to release this film in a similar format to 2021’s Cruella.
The company gave Marvel fans the option to watch this movie in theaters or on the Disney streaming platform, Disney+, with an additional fee. “Premier Access” was first introduced to the subscription service with the live-action adaptation of Mulan, released in 2020.
Subsequently, this Marvel flick did not break box office records similar to its Black Panther and Avengers: Endgame predecessors. This joint Disney+ and theatrical release prompted Scarlett Johansson’s lawsuit against the Walt Disney Company.
“Disney chose to placate Wall Street investors and pad its bottom line, rather than allow its subsidiary Marvel to comply with the agreement,” the suit reads, according to Variety. ” To no one’s surprise, Disney’s breach of the Agreement successfully pulled millions of fans away from the theatres and toward its Disney+ streaming service.”
Will ‘Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ be available for streaming on Disney+?
There’s another superhero joining the MCU. That’s Shang Chi, a martial artist, having been trained to become the ultimate warrior. With its release date approaching, some Marvel fans are wondering if this movie will be available with Premier Access.
Unlike Marvel’s Black Widow, the movie Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will debut only in theaters. According to Movie Web, “Free Guy (Aug. 13) and Shang–Chi (Sept. 3) are the only Disney films currently announced for the 45-day theatrical release plan.”
That’s not to say Shang Chi will never be available on this subscription service. Most likely, though, it’ll be a few months before subscribers can binge-watch the Marvel flick.
Disney is still releasing original content on their subscription service
Disney wouldn’t be the only company to dip into this new release format due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. HBO MAX housed movies like In the Heights and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.
Aside from films, Disney+ houses plenty of original content, including the award-winning Star Wars live-action series, The Mandalorian, as well as High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and Marvel’s WandaVision.
WIth this half-Premier Access, half-in theaters release, some movies became available to all subscribers earlier than expected. That includes Cruella, which, just months after its premiere, will join the Disney+ streaming library. Other films, like Pixar’s Soul and Luca, did not debut in theaters at all.
Some Marvel movies are already available on Disney+, including Avengers: Infinity War, Captain Marvel, and Black Panther.
