Are Rihanna and Chris Brown Friends?
The internet is abuzz with talk about Chris Brown and Rihanna. The two, who dated over a decade ago, have always had a complicated relationship. Rihanna has since moved on and is in a relationship with Saudi Arabian businessman Hassan Jameel and Brown has become a father. But recent events have fans questioning what’s really going on between the former couple. We want to know, after everything that happened between the two: “Are Rihanna and Chris Brown friends?”
Rihanna and Chris Brown have history
Rihanna and Brown first started dating sometime in 2008. The two were relatively new to the scene but had quickly made a name for themselves. After the pair revealed they were dating, they became one of the most buzzed-about couples in music.
Things seemed to be going well for both of them: They were seeing major success in their music careers. In 2009, they were both scheduled to perform at the Grammy awards, a huge feat for the new artists.
But everything came crashing down when news broke that Brown had physically abused Rihanna during the early morning hours of February 8, 2009. The attack was brutal and left the singer with bruises and bite marks. According to reports, Brown aggressively struck Rihanna multiple times and bit her ear. At one point, he put her in a chokehold, causing her to lose consciousness. The police reports also note that he threatened to kill her.
Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault. Later reports and comments from Brown would reveal that the couple had a history of violence. A probation report detailed a 2008 incident where the couple attacked each other while in Europe and another incident where Brown smashed the windows of the couple’s rented Range Rover during an argument.
Rihanna later admitted that Brown was her first big love, and the relationship between them was a bit of an obsession.
Chris Brown recently responded to Rihanna’s Instagram photos
Brown’s violent behavior continued after the 2009 assault. Over the years he has been arrested for assault, had a permanent restraining order placed on him by an ex-girlfriend, been involved in a fight at a night club, and even over three months in jail.
But despite his behavior, the couple briefly got back together in 2012. Their relationship was short-lived and Rihanna later admitted that she thought she could change him. Though they have a violent history they have both admitted to a strong shared love between them.
So it doesn’t come as too much of a surprise that Brown still follows his ex-girlfriend on Instagram. On May 1, Rihanna shared a photo dressed in lacy white lingerie to promote her lingerie line. Brown commented on the photo, writing, “BOUGHT TO BREAK DA INTERNET. KEEP RISING QUEEN.” He wrote another comment saying “MUSIC SOON PLEASE.”
This isn’t the first time Brown has made an appearance in the singer’s comment section and most fans aren’t having it. Many followers have stood up, telling Brown to leave Rihanna alone.

Fans are obviously upset that Brown still has something to do with the Barbados-born beauty, but what does Rihanna think? According to a source, the singer is flattered that Brown is paying attention to her. The source shared: “She is well aware when he views her stories. Despite their rocky past, she keeps an eye on him keeping an eye on her. It makes her feel good to know that he still thinks about her, cause she thinks about him too. She has never blocked him from her social media, she likes that he still cares.”
In November of last year, a source close to Rihanna told Hollywood Life that Rihanna misses Brown and wants to be in his life more. The source made it clear that the singer was not interested in a romantic relationship and only wants to be friends, saying: “She wants to make sure all her friends know and Chris himself that, it will not get sexual. Friendship only is what she is looking for because she misses him and his sense of humor.”
It’s uncertain whether the two have renewed their friendship, but their social media interactions seem to indicate they have. For Rihanna and Brown, they just can’t seem to let go of each other.
