5 Must-See TV and Movie Trailers: ‘Rogue One’ and More
Trailers are as much a part of the movie-going experience nowadays as the films themselves. There’s something incomparably exciting about seeing what amounts to a two-minute sizzle reel of a release’s best scenes. It’s why trailer culture has proliferated into what it is today, and makes it so even the release date of a short teaser is a day to look forward to. In the spirit of this, our team gathers together the best the internet has to offer, delivering all the TV and movie trailers and teasers you can possibly handle in one place every week.
1. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Buzz is building with each passing week for the December release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. That all came to a head with Lucasfilm’s latest trailer for the film, which dives into tons of new, never-before-seen details. In it, we get a look at the basic story, which follows Jyn Erso’s father, Galen, as he’s captured by the Empire and used to help them build the Death Star. Fast-forwarding years into the future, Jyn finds herself rescued from an Imperial detention facility by the Rebellion, who themselves are searching for Galen, in hopes of acquiring key information related to the Death Star’s imminent construction. The cherry on top: even more Darth Vader. The trailer teases at what looks to be a significant role for the infamous Star Wars villain.
2. The Walking Dead, Season 7
AMC’s The Walking Dead incited the ire of fans after its controversial cliffhanger at the end of Season 6. We still don’t know which member of the main cast Negan beat to death with his barbed-wire baseball bat, but what we do know is that it’ll be heartbreaking when we do finally find out.
The network’s “Look Ahead at Season 7” teases at as much, diving into how the dynamic of the series will be irreparably changed, as Rick and the others learn that they’re part of a much of bigger world, even after the zombie apocalypse has decimated humanity (both literally and figuratively). Negan will prove to be their most formidable adversary yet, and as an iconic character from the original comics, he marks a turning point in the series as it seeks new life in its seventh season.
3. Power Rangers
We live in an era of remakes and reboots. If a property was popular sometime in the ’80s and ’90s, odds are Hollywood is going to do everything it can to repackage it for a modern audience. Power Rangers will be the latest to get this treatment, coming to us in the form of the Dean Israelite-led reboot releasing next year.
Israelite is most know for his work directing Project Almanac, but for the most part he’s a relative newcomer to big-budget blockbusters. Along with a similarly green cast, it’ll be interesting to see if the studio can manage to take the decidedly cheesy source TV series and convert it into a solid movie franchise. However it ends up shaking out, they most definitely have our attention.
4. Doctor Who
The new season of Doctor Who doesn’t land until April of next year, but in keeping with the yearly tradition of British television, we’ll be getting a standalone Christmas special for the show this December. The recent “First Look” given to us by BBC America shows us that even Doctor Who isn’t immune to the recent boom in superheroes. Justin Chatwin (Shameless, Orphan Black) plays a mysterious crimefighter named Grant, looking to save New York City from an impending alien threat. Meanwhile, the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) teams up with a local investigative reporter to help Grant. And even though we have to wait six plus months until a run of new episodes, at least we’ll have this to tide us over in the meantime.
5. Iron Fist
It’s safe to say that Marvel struck Netflix gold once again with the recent release of Luke Cage, but it’s the next show in line that really has us excited. Iron Fist releases in March 2017, and the first full-length trailer has arrived to gift us with our first taste. We get to see Finn Jones in action as Danny Rand, a man chosen to be the bearer of a great power, who is out for revenge against the man who killed his father.
Iron Fist represents the final piece of the puzzle, leading into the late-2017 debut of The Defenders, which is set to unite all four of Marvel’s main Netflix heroes together toward a common cause. We’ve already seen what Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage have to offer; it’s time for the last hero to make his grand entrance.
