She gave us the iconic 2011 breakup song, “She’s So Gone” in Disney Channel’s Lemonade Mouth. Ever since then, fans wanted more of Naomi Scott’s headstrong, empowered female characters. Well, the actress is back with Disney, starring as Princess Jasmine in the company’s newest live-action reboot. Here’s what fans are saying about Naomi Scott’s role in Disney’s live-action Aladdin.
‘Aladdin’ actress, Naomi Scott, is a star on the rise
Her first major role in an American film was also for Walt Disney Studios, in the Disney Channel original movie, Lemonade Mouth. Here, Naomi Scott portrayed the smart and headstrong bassist, Mohini, who performed “She’s So Gone” on top of tables at a pizzeria.
Since then, Naomi Scott acted as the Pink Power Ranger in the 2017 Power Rangers movie. She portrayed Maddy Shannon in the television series
Initially, the cast of ‘Aladdin’ received backlash from Disney fans
The controversy that started with Will Smith being cast as the Genie included Naomi Scott, a British-Indian actress, portraying a Middle Eastern character. Some say this is not accurate to the representation needed in this movie.
“Sure, she’s really pretty and I bet she’s real nice too, but Jasmine was literally the first princess of color and then she’s Arab too, like wow we literally still have like zero representation, so casting Naomi Scott as Jasmine was a big mistake and Disney should take it back,” said one Twitter User.
Part of this controversy stems from the undecided geographical location of Agrabah, the city in Aladdin. According to Refinery29, the original 1992 cartoon was supposed to take place in Baghdad, Iraq. The film then took inspiration from South Asia and the Middle East. Disney finally filmed the live-action Aladdin in Jordan and Britain.
Fans (and critics) have mixed reviews about ‘Aladdin,’ but some say Naomi Scott stole the show
This live action adaption of Aladdin is different from the original cartoon. Princess Jasmine even has her own song in this version, entitled “Speechless.” After the movie premiered on May 24, 2019, some fans stated Naomi Scott had one of the starring roles in this production. Even Naomi Scott’s Lemonade Mouth Co-Star, Hayley Kiyoko, added to the Aladdin frenzy.
“#Aladdin is a win for Disney. It’s a little uneven and not as great as it could have been, but still thoroughly entertaining. Will Smith is terrific as the Genie, but it’s an absolute star turn from Naomi Scott and a scene-stealing performance by Nasim Pedrad that power this one,” said one Twitter user.
“I hope the world is ready for Naomi Scott because she is here to stay. She was great as Kimberly in Power Rangers & was the best thing in Aladdin. I cannot wait for Charlie’s Angels and am looking forward to
Naomi Scott next film, Charlie’s Angels, is a reboot of the 2000 action film based on the 1970s television series. She will star alongside Twilight’s Kristen Stewart and To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before’s Noah Centineo.
