Naya Rivera and Ryan Dorsey were married for four years

Rivera married Dorsey in 2014, soon after breaking off her engagement with rapper Big Sean. At the time, Rivera revealed that she and Dorsey had been dating on and off for a while before they decided to tie the knot. In 2015, the couple welcomed their son, Josey Hollis.

A year later, Rivera filed for divorce, but she eventually withdrew the petition and reconciled. However, in 2017, the Glee star filed for divorce again. This petition came just months after she was arrested for domestic battery against Dorsey, who ultimately dropped the charges and asked authorities not to prosecute.

Rivera and Dorsey’s divorce was finalized in 2018. They were granted shared custody of their son, and have been co-parenting ever since.

He helped with the search efforts

On July 8, Rivera went missing after taking her son boating in Lake Piru. When Josey was found alone on the boat, authorities began searching for Rivera. Dorsey arrived at the scene and was seen swimming and searching the area of the lake she went missing.

Five days after she went missing, authorities recovered Rivera’s body in Lake Piru. The Ventura County Sheriff’s department concluded that the actor accidentally drowned while trying to get Josey out of the water and onto the boat.

“She mustered enough energy to get her son back onto the boat, but not enough to save herself,” Sheriff Bill Ayub said in a press conference. “Her family has been at the lake every day holding out hope and communicating with our investigators.”

Ryan Dorsey writes a heartbreaking post about Naya Rivera

In an Instagram post, Dorsey broke his silence and wrote a heartbreaking message about Rivera and their son. He shared a beautiful picture of Rivera holding Josey, and revealed how difficult this time has been.

“This is so unfair…there’s not enough words to express the hole left in everyone’s hearts, Dorsey wrote.  “I can’t believe this is life now. I don’t know if I’ll ever believe it. You were just here… We were just in the back swimming with Josey the day before. Life just isn’t fair. I don’t know what to say…I’m thankful for our times and our journey that brought us together and gave us the sweetest and kindest smart little boy we could ever hope for.”

This is so unfair…there's not enough words to express the hole left in everyone's hearts. I can't believe this is life now. I don't know if I'll ever believe it. You were just here… We were just in the back swimming with Josey the day before. Life just isn't fair. I don't know what to say…I'm thankful for our times and our journey that brought us together and gave us the sweetest and kindest smart little boy we could ever hope for. I remember sometimes you used to get annoyed at me: "Ryan can you stop snap chatting!" Haha. I'm glad I didn't listen to you because I have hundreds and probably thousands of snaps and videos that Josey will have forever and know his momma loved him more than life, and how much fun we had together as he was growing up. Life is all about good times and bad times but with Josey it makes the bad a little less so because a part of you will always be with us. He'll never forget where he came from. We miss you. We will always love you. Love you Meep. ♥️ To everyone that reached out and I haven't had a chance to or just didn't get back to you…thank you all for the overwhelming love and support you've sent our way. I'll just say in closing, be kind to yourself, be kind to others, forgive…forget…don't hold grudges….if you have nothing nice to say maybe try not to say anything. There's peace in silence. Time on Earth is precious and you just never know….you never know what could happen. Hold your loved ones close, and cherish the times you have with those you care about. ♥️

Dorsey then shared a sweet memory of his ex. He noted that she always hated that he took so many pictures of her and Josey. But he now realizes how lucky he is to have all those memories to share with their son.

“I’m glad I didn’t listen to you because I have hundreds and probably thousands of snaps and videos that Josey will have forever and know his momma loved him more than life, and how much fun we had together as he was growing up,” Dorsey continued. “Life is all about good times and bad times but with Josey it makes the bad a little less so because a part of you will always be with us. He’ll never forget where he came from. We miss you. We will always love you. Love you Meep.”
