NBC’s ‘Heroes Reborn’: New Characters and New Powers

A new trailer for NBC’s upcoming Heroes: Reborn has just dropped and it’s reminding us why we all loved Heroes in the first place. The just-released clip gives viewers their first real glimpse at the new group of super-powered characters at the center of the action – including the return of everyone’s favorite time-traveling hero, Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oki).

Like the original, Heroes: Reborn will focus on a group of ordinary people struggling to come to terms with their extraordinary powers. According to a newly released official synopsis, the 13-episode miniseries will take place a year after a terrorist attack in Odessa, Texas, leaves the city decimated. Those with superhuman powers are blamed for the tragic event and forced to either hide or go on the run from the people seeking revenge.

As previously announced, Reborn will feature a mix of new characters and old Heroes favorites. Per the synopsis, Zachary Levi and Judith Shekoni will play two vigilantes, Luke and Joanne, who are seeking to avenge a tragic loss by tracking down those with superpowers. As they search, some heroes are still discovering newfound skills – like awkward teen Tommy (played Robbie Kay), who just wants to be normal and win the girl of his dreams, Emily (Gatlin Green), but can’t after learning of a new ability that terrifies him. Other new heroes include a bold and ethereal teenager, Malina (Danika Yarosh), who has been told she is destined for greatness; quiet and unique young woman, Miko (Kiki Sukezane), who is trying to track down her missing father in Tokyo while also hiding an extraordinary secret; and Carlos (Ryan Guzman), a former soldier with emerging powers.

As for returning characters, fans can expect to see the reappearance of Noah Bennet, aka H.R.G. (Jack Coleman), who has been off the grid until conspiracy theorist Quentin Frady (Henry Zebrowski) finds him and opens his eyes to the truth behind the Odessa tragedy. Meanwhile, various heroes of the past like Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka), Matt Parkman (Greg Grunberg), Mohinder Suresh (Sendhil Ramamurthy) and the Haitian (Jimmy Jean-Louis) are also set to cross paths with the new superhuman forces. Together, their ultimate destiny is nothing less than saving the world and mankind.

Audiences get their first look at both sets of characters in the new teaser, entitled The Extraordinary Among Us, which opens with flashing glimpses of the devastated city. As pictures of graffiti asking, “Where are the heroes?” appear, Guzman’s character is heard declaring, “It doesn’t matter how ordinary we think we are. We all have potential to be heroes.” The real action quickly kicks in with Bennett seen wielding a gun, Tommy holding up his hand as if to enact his power, and – most notably of all – Oki’s Hiro showing up and looking ready to head into battle.

For fans of Heroes, the teaser should come as an exciting promise of what’s to come from the upcoming chapter. From the looks of it, Reborn will amp up the action and introduce new powers, while still preserving some of the best aspects of the original – including some former favorite characters and the eerie post-apocalyptic tone. Original show creator Tim Kring is back on board with the new iteration, which should also come as comfort to the series’ loyal fanbase.

Whether Reborn will actually live up to Heroes remains to be seen, but at the very least, it looks like fans can expect some compelling supernatural drama – and hopefully, a few long-awaited answers to lingering questions from the original show’s final season.

Heroes: Reborn is set to premiere on NBC on September 24 at 8 p.m. ET.
