‘NCIS’ 17: Did Michael Weatherly Just Hint at a Ziva/Tony Reunion?
Cote de Pablo returned to NCIS in the final moments of season sixteen, and fans across the globe issued a simultaneous roar of excitement. However, as the episode came to a close, and the realization of Ziva David’s return sunk in, a new question began to linger across fans’ minds: will Michael Weatherly return as DiNozzo for an epic reunion?
When on NCIS, Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo boasted one of TV’s most famous slow-boiling romances; their palpable chemistry, composed of equal parts humor and heart, oozed from the small screen with each passing episode.
Many fans have presumed that Michael Weatherly’s return to NCIS is no more than a pipedream; he is currently leading the hit CBS original Bull, and likely wouldn’t have the time to squeeze in an NCIS episode or two. However, a fan caught him on the street to discuss a possible return to NCIS. And well, let’s just say Michael Weatherly did not deny the possibility.
Is Michael Weathery keeping his return to ‘NCIS’ a secret?
An NCIS enthusiast took to Twitter to share a recent interaction he had with Michael Weatherly on the street. A different Twitter user (and Ziva David admirer) under the name Cote de Pablo ES shared the video, which you can watch below:
In the video, Michael Weatherly asks the fan, “Are you going to be watching Ziva come back to NCIS?” The fan then proceeded to ask Michael Weatherly, “are you coming back?” Michael Weatherly, brushing off the question with a sly joke (as he is so accustomed to doing), states, “Shhh, I can’t talk about that.” While Michael Weatherly clearly makes light of the moment, it’ quite possible that he’s using the oldest trick in the book — playing it cool to rid of any possible suspicions surrounding his return.
Considering Michael Weatherly did not plainly deny the possibility, NCIS fans may be in store for a little “Tiva” come season seventeen. Since there are already spin-off theories circling the internet — focusing on the two lovebirds and heir daughter — anything seems possible for the future of NCIS. And many would tune in for a Tiva-themed series…
Why Michael Weatherly’s return to ‘NCIS’ would make sense
Michael Weatherly’s Tony and Cote de Pablo’s Ziva shared a narrative arc; their characters and their stories developed in tandem. Thus, bringing Ziva back without Tony — and employing some “top secret mission” excuse to keep DiNozzo utterly in the dark — would just feel forced and unrealistic.
Ziva would want to see her daughter. She would want to see the man she loved and had a child with. And, in real life, she would likely try to spy on them (or something similar) from a distance. How could DiNozzo never find out? How could Ziva return, and DiNozzo remain unreferenced and out the picture? Too many odd scenarios would have to align for DiNozzo and his daughter to be completely amiss from the upcoming season. Given Weatherly’s busy schedule, a cameo (towards the end) seems like the most probable turn of events.
