“NCIS”: Producers Say Diona Reasonover’s Kasie Hines Isn’t Trying to Be Another Abby

NCIS” fans were heartbroken when Abby (Pauley Perrette) left the team. However, she quickly got a replacement when forensic expert Kasie Hines (Diona Reasonover) joined the group. Some fans think Kasie is just another Abby wannabe, but producers say this isn’t the case. Here’s what they said about Reasonover’s transition to the show.

How Diona Reasonover got into acting

In an interview with CBS, Reasonover explained how she caught the acting bug.  She shared that her sister helped her see that she wanted to become a performer. “I got into acting because my sister was a gymnast. And so, I would watch her on stage, and I’d turn to my parents and be like, ‘When is it my turn?’ even though I am so clumsy that I could trip my way out of a paper bag. But it just got really into me very early that the arts is something that we did,” Reasonover said. As a young adult, Reasonover honed her acting skills with a performing arts group in Detroit. “When I started acting with a group called Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit, they gave me the training, the discipline, and the knowledge that being an actor is hard,” she told CBS.

“NCIS” producer Frank Cardea said the production team was looking for someone who brought a unique personality to the cast. Cardea told CBS he knew he found what he was looking for when Reasonover joined the team. “It had to be somebody who brought her own personality into the room. Diona certainly does that. Very talented actress. Very talented writer,” said Cardea. He also says Reasonover fit in with the cast and crew almost right away. “She brings something to every scene she does. The second day she was here, you felt like she’d been here for years. We’re a very welcoming group. Everyone embraced her and made her feel at ease,” added Cardea.

Diona Reasonover doesn’t try to be another Abby Sciuto

Although Kasie and Abby are both quirky, they differ in a lot of ways. Executive producer Chas. Floyd Johnson told CBS Reasonover realized she couldn’t be a copy of Abby and that she had to do her own thing when it came to bringing Kasie to life. “They were tough shoes to fill. In fact, I heard [Reasonover] say they were tough platform shoes to fill. I applaud her because when you have someone like Pauley Perrette on a series for 15 years and who really made that character her own–Diona came in and sort of decided, ‘I’m gonna do it my way. And I think she decided that she couldn’t be Pauley, and she shouldn’t be.”

Producer Steven D. Binder says Diona Reasonover brings ‘energy’ to the cast

Executive Producer Steven D. Binder said he is thrilled with Reasonover’s casting. He told CBS the actress brings a lot of energy to the series. “We could not have done better with her casting and her addition on the show. She brings energy to the show as a writer. And I know the other writers feel the same way. You write something and you always hope that they don’t screw it up. But what you really hope is that they make it better. And she does that every time,” said Binder.
