NCIS: Is McGee Leaving the Show? Why Sean Murray Might Not Return

Any TV show that’s on the air for the better part of two decades must be doing something right. NCIS is one of the few dramas to last more than 10 years, and it has some of the highest-paid cast members as a result. Sean Murray, who plays Timothy McGee on the show, has been there since the beginning. He has more than 350 episodes under his belt, but McGee might be leaving since Sean Murray might not return for the 17th season in 2019. We’ll take a look at his other roles, why he might depart, and his net worth.

What are Sean Murray’s other roles?

Most of Sean Murray’s acting credits are for TV shows and movies, but he has two notable movie roles. He shared the screen with Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio in This Boy’s Life in 1993, when he was 16. He played a big part opposite Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy in the comedy Hocus Pocus the same year.

As for his TV work, Murray played Zen Hart on Harts of the West from 1993-94. He appeared in six episodes of JAG between 1998 and 2001, and he landed a leading role in the spinoff NCIS when it started in 2003.

Is McGee leaving? Why Sean Murray might be gone

Sean Murray’s Timothy McGee is a mainstay on NCIS. Only super-rich star Mark Harmon, David McCallum (as Ducky), and former standout Pauley Perrette appear in more episodes. However, we won’t be surprised if McGee leaves the team soon.

Though Murray is a key member of the cast and McGee is instrumental to the NCIS squad, the show wrote off other characters in the past. Both Perrette and Michael Weatherly departed in recent years. It looks like McCallum might not return when the 17th season comes around in 2019. There’s even a rumor that Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs might be leaving, and if that happens, then it’s hard to imagine the show continuing.

The show’s writers constantly toy with fans’ emotions, as TV Insider notes, and killing off a main character is as emotional as it gets. Plus, the NCIS team welcomed several new members recently, such as Diona Reasonover’s Kasie Hines and Wilmer Valderrama’s  Nick Torres. With new actors ready to assume larger roles, the time is right for a longtime mainstay to exit stage right.

How much does he make for NCIS?

We know Mark Harmon makes a fortune for his work on NCIS. As the star and producer, he makes $525,000 per episode. We can almost guarantee Sean Murray doesn’t make that much, but our guess is he pulls in six figures for each show.

Weatherly reportedly made $250,000 per episode at the end of his run. Murray and some of his castmates got lowball contract offers from CBS in 2010, but given the show’s sustained success, his paychecks are almost certainly higher than $100,000 at this point.

What is Sean Murray’s net worth?

Murray’s extended run starring on NCIS is definitely helping his bottom line. Even though he might not be as rich as Harmon, Perrette, or McCallum, he still has a nice nest egg for retirement. Sean Murray’s net worth reaches $8 million in 2018, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
