‘NCIS’: Is Michael Weatherly Married?
Michael Weatherly is married and has two children, but his conduct outside of his marriage has been under intense scrutiny lately. The former NCIS star and the current Bull star was accused of sexual harassment by former Bull co-star Eliza Dushku, who said CBS paid her $9.5 million to settle the case.
We’ll look at Weatherly’s past, take a closer look at the allegations, and see what the future may hold for him.
Michael Weatherly’s past and current relationships
Weatherly is married to Bojana Jankovic, a medical internist, for nearly ten years. They have two children: a son and a daughter.
He had previously been married to actress Amelia Heinle from 1995 to 1997. In the early 1990s, Heinle had been Weatherly’s co-star on the soap opera Loving, which was one of Weatherly’s early credits. They have one son.
Weatherly was also in a long-term relationship with actress Jessica Alba from 2000 to 2003. They starred together on the series Dark Angel.
Michael Weatherly’s career
His first role was as Theo’s roommate on a 1991 episode of The Cosby Show. Other credits include appearances on Charmed and Ally McBeal, and he played Robert Wagner in the TV movie The Mystery of Natalie Wood.
He got his big break when he landed the role of Tony DiNozzo on JAG in 2003. That span off into NCIS, where he became a fan favorite, particularly for his scenes with Cote de Pablo, who plays Ziva. Fans were distressed when de Pablo left the show in 2013, and when Weatherly himself followed in 2016.
Michael Weatherly’s sexual harassment claims
Last year a report in The New York Times revealed that CBS had settled the sexual harassment claim that Dushku made against Weatherly. According to documents, Weatherly was recorded on video speaking about spanking Dushku over his knee, asking for a threesome, referring to a “rape van,” and other inappropriate remarks.
Dushku was fired from the show, with the $9.5 million settlement being equivalent to what she would have earned had she been a series regular as planned.
Weatherly publicly apologized for his comments, and he still has his job on Bull, which has been renewed for a fourth season. Otherwise, Weatherly has remained silent about the controversy, even going so far as to delete his social media accounts.
Weatherly said in his apology: “When Eliza told me that she wasn’t comfortable with my language and attempt at humor, I was mortified to have offended her and immediately apologized. After reflecting on this further, I better understand that what I said was both not funny and not appropriate and I am sorry and regret the pain this caused Eliza.”
Dushku did not accept the apology, calling it “more deflection, denial, and spin.”
What does the future hold for Michael Weatherly?
Weatherly will return on Bull after CBS considered the situation and noted Weatherly’s remorse.
“Michael made a mistake in his comments (to Dushku). He owned that mistake. He was apologetic at the time, and he was remorseful,” CBS President Kelly Kahl told Variety. “He was willing to take any kind of coaching or training we deem necessary for him to create a positive environment on the set.”
“When we looked at the totality of the situation, we felt comfortable bringing ‘Bull’ back on the air,” he added.
Fans quoted in Distractify were divided over the controversy, with some supporting Weatherly. One tweeted, “I’m sorry but Michael Weatherly has been on CBS for years and has NEVER had one negative sexual claim against him. No I don’t believe this.”
However, others sharply criticized him, with one person saying: “Michael Weatherly is gross. Didn’t he try to get someone fired from Dark Angel because he was a romantic rival or something?? Who makes a joke about rape?”
After Weatherly deleted his social media accounts, some fans said that was cover for de Pablo’s surprise return to the show at the very end of last season. Weatherly may not be back there, but at least they have Ziva to look forward to.
