‘NCIS’: How Mark Harmon Feels About Being Called ‘Papa Smurf’

NCIS star Mark Harmon has been playing the character Leroy Jethro Gibbs since the show began in 2003. During that time, he formed close relationships with the cast and even picked up a few nicknames along the way. Here’s how Harmon said he feels about one of his more unusual nicknames, “Papa Smurf.”

During a 2013 interview with Extra TV, Harmon spoke about the interaction among the cast. The host expressed her surprise at how long NCIS has been on TV. “Eleven seasons, that’s a long time to play the same character!” remarked the host. However, Harmon said it was all good because the cast members liked each other:

You’ve met the whole cast. And you know that they all like each other, and we don’t act that. It’s a remarkable place; I can talk about it all day. But this is a rare occurrence. I’ve done enough shows to know that, and so have many on the show. As long as we can appreciate that, I think we’ll continue to grow.

The NCIS cast is close. A result of that closeness is the cast members’ habit of giving cute nicknames to each other. One nickname that stuck with Harmon is “Papa Smurf.” He is also sometimes called Silver Fox. How does Harmon feel about that name? During an interview with Center Stage, he revealed what he really thinks about being called Silver Fox and Papa Smurf. It doesn’t seem like he’s all that thrilled with the names. “I think both of them are dorky,” he told the host. The host then asked, ‘What does Pam call you?’ (Pam Dawber is Harmon’s wife.) “None of your business,’ Harmon joked. We guess he’s happier with the cast just calling him Mark. Here’s a look at Harmon’s interview with Center Stage.

Mark Harmon has many nicknames

During an interview with the BUILD Series, Cote de Pablo mentioned she has many nicknames for Harmon. “I have many nicknames for him. I have Mark, Marcos, Dorko, Dorky. I mean I have so many different names,” she said.

Harmon also has nicknames for de Pablo. One of his names for her is “goat.” During an Entertainment Tonight interview, Harmon said he likes to keep things light and fun on the set. De Pablo said she doesn’t mind the nickname. De Pablo explains, “He calls me goat. Don’t ask me why,” she joked.
