‘NCIS’: 4 Things You Didn’t Know About the Cast

How much do you really know about the NCIS cast? Here are four things you probably didn’t know about the stars of the show.

1. Michael Weatherly has a special connection to the Swiss Army Knife

The Swiss Army knife has special meaning for Weatherly because it links back to his childhood. The actor told Stephen Colbert that his father imported Swiss Army knives when he was a child. At the time, Weatherly’s father was the only U.S. importer:

My father was the U.S. importer of the Swiss Army knife from 1973 about to the late 80s. It was the original Swiss Army knife. In the fifth grade, my father was explaining to me the difference between paying cost for something and then wholesale and then retail. And then I caught on to this idea that I could actually get that knife, which was retailing for $50, for $7. So, I asked Dad if I could get a few. And then what I did was I brought them to school, and I started selling them, and they were moving like hot cakes. I was adding 10% just to take care of myself.

2. Mark Harmon used to sell shoes and do other odd jobs

Before Harmon’s acting career got off the ground, he held several odd jobs. During a 2018 interview with Rich Eisen, the actor spoke about his long journey:

I sold shoes. I was in law school for a little bit. I worked at Adidas for about eight months, and before that I was doing merchandising and radio. I was studying acting during the nighttime, but for a few years after college, other than being a carpenter, I was just trying to do whatever I could do to make a few bucks.

3. Cote de Pablo said she and Ziva David are alike

When asked by Prevention magazine how she identifies with her character Ziva David, de Pablo said they are both strong women. Here’s what she told Prevention magazine about the strength they share and why:

My character’s strength is like mine, to a completely different degree. Losing family members because of a war… I have moments when I just have to hold my heart. But I also have to remember that if I played the character from my point of view, she’d be falling apart all the time. She has to keep it together–it’s the world she grew up in.

4. Pauley Perrette has a deep reason for dyeing her hair

Pauley Perrette told Queen Latifah she wanted to keep the black hair for her fans. She said she loves the character and felt responsible for keeping Abby the same for the sake of NCIS viewers. “You’re doing this because you really care about Abby and how we feel about her,” observed Queen Latifah. Perrette agreed and said a lot of people suggested she go back to her original hair color. However, Perrette didn’t feel that would be true to her character’s image. “A lot of people were like ‘Oh no, go blonde.’ And I’m like, I don’t think the world is ready for a blonde Abby. I’m not ready for a blonde Abby.”

Queen Latifah was impressed Perrette was willing to go through so much for her character. The actress said she had the fans in mind. “I’m a little Abby obsessed; I love her so much, and I want to be her when I grow up,” responded Perrette. “[Abby] has always looked the same and you don’t want to see a big change. You don’t want to really see her age; you don’t want to see her change… Because she is such a little cartoon character, I’m going to do everything I can to keep her the same—for the masses.”
