‘NCIS’: Why Michael Weatherly Could Actually Return to the Show

The ‘almost’ romance of Tony and Ziva kept fans of NCIS tuning in week after week to watch their relationship unfold.

Since Cote de Pablo’s surprise return to the show in the Season 16 finale, we’ve all been wondering if this means the Agent Tony DiNozzo might be making an appearance in the upcoming seasons. We can hope, right?

Michael Weatherly left ‘NCIS’ on good terms

Weatherly has often stated that part of his decision to leave NCIS was simply due to the fact that Cote de Pablo was gone. He missed their easy-going banter and the relationship they had on and off the camera.

Without her there, he didn’t have the same kind of synergy with the show that he once enjoyed. In fact, he tells reporters, he felt like he had “stayed at the party for too long.”

He was also ready to move on to new things, as he quickly started his role in the network’s legal series Bull.

“It came about at the right time. I was burnt out by NCIS and I was ready for a new challenge,” Weatherly told reporters at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour. “Sometimes change is as good as a rest.”

If that’s the case, perhaps its time for another change? Back to NCIS maybe?

The Tony and Ziva storyline is a fan favorite and might increase viewership

There are so many moments where “Tiva” endeared fans to the show. Rekindling their romance would prove to have widespread satisfaction amongst the shows more diehard fans, especially now that there has been a child added to the plot.

Viewers have often seen Tony and Ziva get out of sticky situations in the past, ie being locked in a storage container, being stuck in an elevator, outrunning various bad guys.

The drama that would unfold as the two attempted co-parenting would definitely be fodder for the comic tension the two share.

Aside from that, Tony left the NCIS team under the premise of caring for his daughter after Ziva’s death. Is Gibb’s team going to be able to keep it a secret from Tony that Ziva is, in fact, alive? How will Ziva be able to keep herself from seeing her daughter? Wouldn’t it make a good cliff hanger if Tony were to catch a glimpse of Ziva right at the season finale?

Weatherly could use some positive PR

CBS is still under scrutiny following Eliza Dushku’s sexual harassment claim against her Bull co-star, Michael Weatherly. Allegedly, Weatherly used crude and inappropriate humor directed toward his female co-star Dushku, in reference to her looks, sexual acts, and even rape.

Although he apologized for causing her any discomfort on the job site, he remains fully employed by CBS and they renewed his show for another season.

The network and Weatherly himself have faced backlash for the lack of consequences faced by Weatherly for his misconduct.

Putting Weatherly back together with the NCIS cast could do more than just appease his fans, it could also appear like the network was pulling him from a show in which he holds the lead role, and putting him back into a supporting cast position. A “punishment,” so to speak, for his aggressive behavior.

Is his return being kept a secret?

Viewers are eagerly awaiting the fall return of NCIS in September and are already clamoring for a return of DiNozzo. NCIS‘s Instagram account is pumped full of requests from fans for more information, demands to understand why Ziva’s life was kept a secret, and pleading for a Ziva and Tony reunion.

Our only recourse is to tune in for Season 17 and continue hoping for Gibbs to invite Tony back to work.
