New Episodes of ‘Unsolved Mysteries’ Are Coming to Netflix in October, and There Will Definitely Be Ghosts Involved
Think you have what it takes to solve an unsolved mystery? Amateur sleuths can put their skills to the test when Netflix drops another six installments of Unsolved Mysteries later this year. The fresh episodes will arrive on October 19, the streaming service has announced. And in a nod to the spookiest season of the year, this batch of head-scratching cases will include at least one strange, ghostly occurrence.
‘Unsolved Mysteries’ delves into the paranormal
The original Unsolved Mysteries — which ran from the late ‘80s to the late ‘90s and was hosted by Robert Stack — always featured a grab bag of mysteries. A typical episode might have included an unsolved murder, interviews with people desperate to reunite with a long-lost loved one, and a tale of an encounter with aliens or ghosts.
So far, the new episodes of the Unsolved Mysteries reboot have mostly been about unsolved murders and baffling disappearances, though one episode did focus on an alleged encounter with a UFO. But at least one the next six episodes will touch on a haunting, executive producer Terry Dunn Meurer told Variety.
“Yes,” Meurer said when asked if there was ghost episode on the horizon. “But I’ll qualify that and say it’s an unusual ghost episode. That’s all I’ll say. It’s different. A bit different.”
There will be more international cases
The first batch of new Unsolved Mysteries featured the case of Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès, who police suspect murdered his family in Nantes, France, in 2011. The next six episodes of Unsolved Mysteries will also highlight two more international cases, Meurer told Variety.
Looking at cases outside the U.S. is part of a conscious effort to share diverse stories on Unsolved Mysteries.
“[W]e look at every other kind of diversity: We’ve got international versus domestic, we have rural versus urban, we have age diversity, we have ethnic and racial diversity. They all have to have a lot of twists and turns and need to be very intriguing. If they’re intriguing to us, we know that they’re going to be intriguing to an audience,” Meuer shared.
Have any of the ‘Unsolved Mysteries’ cases been solved?
Tips from viewers led to the unraveling of more than 200 cases featured on the original Unsolved Mysteries. So far, none of the six cases seen in the reboot have been solved. However, thousands of people have reached out to share information they think might be relevant, Meuer said. That includes an intriguing tip from someone who thinks they may have spotted Dupont de Ligonnès in Chicago and a message from an entomologist who shared some information that might help explain how long Alonzo Brooks’ body had been exposed before it was found.
The Unsolved Mysteries team also still fields tips and cooperates with law enforcement on old cases. Meuer believes that police may be close to identifying a man who died by suicide in an Idaho church in 1982. The case was featured in a 1990 episode. The Unsolved Mysteries team was able to provide details about the case to a new investigator. That investigator believes he may have discovered the name of the John Doe.
Unsolved Mysteries is currently streaming on Netflix. New episodes will be available October 19.
