New ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ Trailer Reveals Plot Details
Fans of the Mad Max series of dystopian action films recently got another reason to get excited about the next installment. A brand new trailer for Mad Max: Fury Road has just been released that offers several never-before-seen action sequences, as well as a few additional clues about the storyline. The new trailer ramps up the already high expectations that fans have had for Mad Max: Fury Road ever since the first trailer dropped late last year. George Miller — who directed or co-directed all of the films in the original trilogy – is helming the reboot with Tom Hardy in the titular role that was previously played by Mel Gibson.
In the trailer, we see a gagged and chained Max (Hardy) fleeing from several bad guys through a labyrinth of caves as a voiceover intones, “In this wasteland, I am the one who runs from both the living and the dead. A man reduced to a single instinct: survive.” After bursting through a pair of reclaimed van doors embedded in the middle of a cliff, Mad Max makes a desperate leap toward a dangling hook. And that’s just in the first 15 seconds.
The opening scene is followed by over two minutes of stunning visuals and action sequences, including more glimpses of the violent, dust-filled car chase scene that has been featured in previous trailers. While the entire trailer is a visual feast of post-apocalyptic imagery, perhaps the most memorable scene is one that features a masked man playing a flame-throwing electric guitar atop a vehicle piled with amplifiers. However, it’s not just two and a half minutes of car crashes and explosions. The new trailer also features new details about the characters and events behind the completely insane imagery.
Costars Charlize Theron and Hugh Keays-Byrne both feature prominently in the new trailer. Theron plays a shaven-headed character called Imperator Furiosa, while Keays-Byrne plays Immortan Joe, the evil leader of a group of desert outlaws. Keays-Byrne is a familiar face to fans of the first movie, in which he played Toecutter, Mad Max’s primary antagonist. The latest trailer suggests that the new movie’s plot revolves around Furiosa and Max helping a group of captive women escape the clutches of Immortan Joe.
In one scene, Immortan Joe enters a locked room secured with a thick bank vault door where he asks a solitary woman, “Where is she taking them?” Imperator Furiosa is then shown driving a vehicle filled with women who she presumably liberated from Immortan Joe’s fortress. So it appears that one of the reasons for Furiosa and Mad Max joining forces is to help these captives escape from Immortan Joe and his band of souped-up car-driving marauders.
One interesting architectural feature to note in the new trailer: The room that Immortan Joe unlocks has a domed cage roof that recalls the “Thunderdome” battle arena featured in the third Mad Max film. This suggests that Mad Max: Fury Road may feature additional hat tips to the previous films. Besides Hardy, Theron, and Hugh Keays-Byrne, Mad Max: Fury Road also features stars like Nicholas Hoult, Nathan Jones, Riley Keough, Zoë Kravitz, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Mad Max: Fury Road will make its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 14 before it lands in U.S. theaters on May 15.
