New Poll Reveals Voters’ Favorite Movies in Every Genre, and Fans Have Some Intense Thoughts
When it comes to movies, everyone has an opinion. What some moviegoers consider a classic, others might deem completely pointless. So it’s always fun when a new poll gauges what viewers claim as their favorite movies. To that end, Buzzfeed recently launched a new poll that has divided users and caused quite an uproar as a result. Let’s take a look.
The poll asked voters to select their favorite movies
The new Buzzfeed poll asks users to select their favorite movies in a variety of different categories. Some of these are straightforward enough, gauging which romantic comedy or horror classic fans love most. But the stakes were even higher than simply picking a favorite movie.
Rather, this is one of those polls wherein all other options in each category would disappear forever. Because of that, voters approached their selections a bit more carefully. In this context, should they simply pick their favorites or the movies that represent the best of each genre?
Everyone has his or her own set of criteria about how to tackle the poll. And some, like user “superrockstar67,” were less than pleased with the results. “Well done, everyone. [You picked] literally the worst possible choice winning for every category. (Also: am I so out of touch? No, it’s the children who are wrong.),” the user wrote.
Classic movies fell prey to favorites from the 1990s and beyond
Without reviewing every single category breakdown, one of the biggest trends was more recent movies triumphing over classics. For instance, 2011’s Bridesmaids handily defeated classics like The Princess Bride and Monty Python and the Holy Grail to be named best comedy. Likewise, Mean Girls was named the best teen movie over films like Clueless and Heathers.
The former choice really burned user “l4d615bb5a,” who wrote “Too many of you have never seen When Harry Met Sally or Monty Python and the Holy Grail. And to that I say, your mother was a hamster, and your father smelled of elderberries!” Truly, the Buzzfeed poll reveals a lot about which classic movies voters preferred.
And in some cases, the poll might even highlight how little some beloved films — including Heathers, Blue Velvet, Citizen Kane, West Side Story, Singin’ in the Rain, Taxi Driver, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Chinatown, all of which each received 5 percent or less of the votes in their respective categories — are known to Buzzfeed users.
‘Harry Potter’ is the leading fan-favorite franchise
But the most heated reactions were in response to the race for the best “fandom franchise.” Harry Potter easily beat out the Marvel Cinematic Universe with 38 percent to 23 percent. And Star Wars came in at number three with just 13 percent of the votes. User “prekeles” was not having it: “I still don’t understand how Harry Potter is this popular. The books were bad. The movies were bad. I love fantasy, but they just were not my thing.”
The Lord of the Rings fans really came out to support their favorite movie trilogy, which received 10 percent of the votes. It only beat out The Hunger Games and Twilight, which had 9 percent and 7 percent, respectively. “Why is there so little love for Lord Of The Rings?,” user “ginny2020 said. “That is one of the best film franchises ever!”
And rather than be mad at her fellow voters, user “KatharinaLukas” pleaded with them to spend a little quality time in Middle-earth. “I have just one humble request: please watch The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and since we all have pretty much time on our hands right now, maybe you could even be persuaded to read the books. Pretty please?”
