There have been rumors for months that Ben Affleck will be leaving the DC Extended Universe, and now The Hollywood Reporter is again indicating that Affleck will not return for Matt Reeves’ The Batman.
In a new article from The Hollywood Reporter today about the upcoming standalone Joker film, Matt Reeves’ The Batman is mentioned, and the piece states that Affleck will not return for the movie. This is something The Hollywood Reporter had reported months ago, but they are now continuing to report that Affleck is leaving even after he and the studio publicly denied this.
“War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves is developing a Batman stand alone that, according to sources, will not star Ben Affleck, who plays the caped crusader in the DC Universe movies,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
This comes a week after there was some confusion about whether The Batman would even take place in the DC Extended Universe. Matt Reeves said in an interview that the film “isn’t part of the extended universe,” but he later clarified that he meant that the film will be a standalone story. Reeves specifically said in his clarification that The Batman is a part of the DC Extended Universe.
If Ben Affleck doesn’t star in The Batman, that can only mean one of two things: one, The Batman isn’t a part of the DC Extended Universe despite what Reeves said, or two, Ben Affleck is leaving the DC Extended Universe. After all, it would not make sense for the movie to take place in the same series as Justice League yet have a different actor playing Batman, only to have that same actor return for a later movie.
There have been reports over the past few months that Ben Affleck would be leaving the DC Extended Universe. In July, The Hollywood Reporter said that “the studio is working on plans to usher out Affleck’s Batman — gracefully, addressing the change in some shape or form in one of the upcoming DC films.” The Hollywood Reporter also said that it’s a safe bet that Affleck will not be in The Batman, something they are continuing to report.
At Comic Con in July, Ben Affleck denied reports that he would be leaving the Batman role.
“I am the luckiest guy in the world,” he said. “Batman is the coolest f*cking part in any universe. It’s f*cking amazing and I still can’t believe it after two films… And Matt Reeves doing it, I would be an ape on the ground for Matt Reeves. And I think you’ll see why I’m so excited to be Batman.”
