New ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Trailer: Hulk Jokes and Other Spoilers

The next Marvel Cinematic Universe film scheduled for release is Thor: Ragnarok, the third (and almost definitely final) solo film for the Asgardian God of Thunder. A second trailer was revealed at the 2017 San Diego Comic-Con, and we learned even more about what’s to come for our hero.

So what’s new and what does it all mean? Let’s break down the trailer and get excited for the November premiere.

1. Hulk speaks!

Good old Bruce Banner comes along with Thor on this adventure, and we get a few scenes of the “friends from work” palling around in this trailer. But the most talked-about exchange involves the scientist’s much larger counterpart.

Hulk has appeared on screen in both Avengers films, but his speech has been very limited. As director Taika Waititi explained at SDCC, “I was always fascinated by the duality of Hulk and Banner, and seeing how their brains could be interconnected.”

So it sounds like Banner’s time away from Earth has brought him closer to his green side.

2. Loki and Thor go all Ghostbusters

In Thor: Dark World, we finally saw bad guy Loki work on the side of good with his brother. With Tom Hiddleston slated to return to the character in Avengers: Infinity War, it’s no surprise that the Ragnarok trailer featured him in a larger protagonist role than we’ve seen before.

We see Thor, Banner, and Valkyrie discover an imprisoned Loki, and it would seem that they set him free soon after. He fights alongside them in the battle against Hela. There’s even a nice moment of brotherly love, where Thor and Loki aim their laser weapons at the minions of the Grandmaster.

3. Thor is funnier than ever

Thor opens his mouth to speak while looking up.

As the movies have gone on, Thor has become more and more like his portrayer. Chris Hemsworth said that he “spoke with Taika, spoke with Kevin [Feige] and all of us agreed that if we’re going to make a third Thor, we have to really push the envelope and experiment and take it to another level.”

One of those changes was adding in more humor for Hemsworth. Waititi has been quoted as saying, “He’s so good and underutilized in that department. He’s legitimately one of the funniest things in this film.”

If that final scene with Hulk is any indication, we’d have to agree.

4. Cate Blanchett looks fierce as Hela

Drawing some comparisons to Angelina Jolie in Maleficent, Cate Blanchett nevertheless looks entirely the part of the Goddess of Death Hela in the trailer. Fans of the comics know that Hela has been linked to the destruction of Asgard in the past, so it seems only fitting that she makes her appearance in Ragnarok.

Sometimes called “The Death Queen,” Hela has many powers, some of which we see in the trailer. Among them is her ability to “manifest weapons out of different parts of her body,” as Blanchett explained to EW months ago.

Her headpiece especially looks like it will be a fun addition to the villain.

5. Valkyrie is a part of the team

In the first trailer, Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie is seen watching Thor as he’s locked up in Sakaar by the Grandmaster’s guards and standing beside Jeff Goldblum’s character — clearly on his side, despite her Asgardian heritage.

But the new trailer sees her switching teams. In one of the trailer’s most astoundingly beautiful shots, Valkyrie fights alongside Loki, Thor, and Banner, taking on Hela while clad in impressive armor and perched atop a flying horse.

6. There are a lot of hands (and paws) in this battle

So far, we know that Hela has Skurge, an Asgardian who guards the Bifröst Bridge. There are also the central heroes discussed, as well as the Grandmaster and his Sakaar pawns. But we get a glimpse of a few more players in this trailer.

Korg, a massive, rock-like creature voiced by and motion-capture acted by Waititi himself, is a friend to Thor while on Sakaar. On the opposing side, it looks like Hulk will be taking on the massive Fenris Wolf, who comic canon denotes as Loki’s son, oddly enough.

7. Who is Surtur?

That final shot of Hulk is epic, isn’t it? The Green Giant launches himself at Surtur, a fire demon who has been instrumental in the comics in bringing about Ragnarok. But will he succeed?

The outcome of the film is unknown, of course, but CBR did a little investigative work and discovered that a new toy on the market depicts Thor seemingly post-battle, wearing the skull of Surtur on his back. Surely this means that they somehow manage to kill the beast.
