Like anything popular enough to spark rabid fandom, the video game industry is full of secrets. Companies wait for just the right time to announce new games and hardware in hopes of making the biggest splash possible. Fans, for their part, want to know everything that’s coming down the line as soon as possible. In that kind of environment, video game leaks and rumors are bound to trickle out.
This week we’ve uncovered three rumors and leaks that have a decent chance of being true. So follow along as we try to find out the secrets the video game industry doesn’t want to let out yet.
1. Will the NX be delayed?
Despite the fact that Nintendo’s next game console is slated for a March 2017 launch — that’s only six months away! — the company hasn’t done anything to promote it. We don’t even know what the thing will look like. We don’t know if it will be a handheld device, a home console you plug into a TV, or some kind of hybrid, as the rumors suggest. We don’t know how powerful it will be, or what games are launching with it. It’s all a big question mark.
A thread on the gaming forum NeoGAF, along with an article on Forbes, suggests that Nintendo’s silence hints toward a delay. After all, we’ve always known exactly what to expect from upcoming game consoles at this point in the run-up to launch. Yet still, Nintendo has given no indication about when it will formally unveil the hardware.
Adding to this speculation is Super Mario Run, a mobile game launching in December that’s sure to make a fortune for Nintendo, which ought to give the company some wiggle room with investors for the NX’s launch. In other words, don’t be surprised if the NX is pushed back beyond March.
2. Is Red Dead Revolver coming to PS4?
Most gamers remember Red Dead Redemption, Rockstar’s 2010 game about cowboys and corrupt lawmen in the Wild West. Fewer remember Red Dead Revolver, the first game in the series, which launched on PlayStation 2 in 2004. It isn’t remembered nearly as fondly as its sequel, but it’s still a member of the Red Dead family.
If you missed Revolver in its initial release, it looks like you’ll get another chance to play it, because PS4 trophies for the game have appeared on Sony’s servers. When that happens, a game’s release is all but a sure thing.
If this rumor is true, that would add to the hints about the heavily rumored Red Dead Redemption sequel. What better way to get people excited about a new game than by bringing the rest of the series to current platforms?
3. Will NX and the new Zelda launch on March 4?
Yes, this rumor directly contradicts the earlier one about the NX possibly being delayed, but that’s what rumors are for: sussing out the truth. Here’s some evidence the NX might not be delayed.
Seeing as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the only Nintendo game we know is coming to NX, it’s safe to assume it will launch on the same day the NX comes out. If that’s the case, the date could be March 4, 2017. That’s the day Nintendo UK and Nintendo France have listed for the release of the Breath of the Wild Amiibo figurines.
Does that mean both the game and the NX will come out that day? Not necessarily, but it’s definitely possible, seeing as Nintendo has promised a March 2017 launch for the NX. That could mean the NX isn’t delayed after all. But as with all NX rumors, we’ll have to wait for official word from Nintendo to know for sure. I just hope we don’t all die of old age before that happens.
