It seems like just yesterday RuPaul crowned Yvie Oddly the winner of season 11. A few months later, RuPaul announced the series would return to VH1 for RuPaul’s Drag Race season 12 and RuPaul’s Drag Race: All-Stars 5. Until then, a few new drag queens are joining the sisterhood.
RuPaul announced that there would be a season of Drag Race taking place in the United Kingdom. This series, entitled RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, features a similar style of competition, but with new judges and a new cast of contestants ready to snatch the crown.
Who are the queens of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race UK’?
This upcoming season of Drag Race features a handful of queens for fans to fall in love with. That includes Divina De Campo, Cheryl Hole, Blu Hydrangea, Baga Chipz, Gothy Kendoll, Crystal, Sum Ting Wong, Vinegar Strokes, Scaredy Kat, and The Vivienne. During an interview with BBC, some of the RuPaul’s Drag Race UK queens reflected on their self-expression and drag as a whole.
“Drag is the new black,” said Vinegar Strokes. “There weren’t as many drag queens back when I started doing it. You can really see the shift in how it’s penetrated people’s lives. So many people want to be involved with us in some shape or form.”
“It’s really important for me because there’s no same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland. It’s an opportunity for me to showcase why gay marriage is so important,” Blu Hydrangea said. “I feel like it’s not even general knowledge to people. People assume Northern Ireland is the same as the rest of the UK.”
RuPaul’s DragCon will appear in London this January and features the queens from ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race UK’
If you want to meet the contestants from this season of Drag Race, you’re in luck. RuPaul is bringing DragCon to London, England. RuPaul’s DragCon is the world’s largest culture convention, previously appearing in New York City and Los Angeles, and will be in London from Jan. 18 through Jan. 19, 2020. In a press release, the World of Wonder co-founders commented on the role of drag queens in pop culture.
“At this dark time in our country we came together to celebrate life, love, and liberty. We are especially excited that the family of all things drag is expanding from Vegas (Drag Race Live!) to the UK (RuPaul’s DragCon UK) … and beyond. We are so grateful to all the queens who came from all over the world. They remind us that we are all born naked and the rest is drag, that we are all equal, and that it’s about opening our arms and hearts to one another, not building walls to keep people out,” said World of Wonder co-founders Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato.
RuPaul’s Drag Race UK premieres on BBC Three section of BBC iPlayer and on WOWPresents Plus on Oct. 3, 2019.
