Nick Viall Asked Kaitlyn Bristowe To Stop Making Him The Butt Of Her Jokes

After Nick Viall competed for Kaitlyn Bristowe’s heart on her season of The Bachelorette, the two didn’t speak for four years.

Recently, Bristowe and Viall have made amends and even appeared on each other’s podcasts. When the former bachelorette was interviewed by Viall for The Viall Files, the two discussed the reasoning behind their previously “contentious relationship.”

“I gotta say, I said this to you when you called, it definitely always bothered me the contentious relationship that we had and I felt like the perception was we had a very contentious relationship more than maybe even we did,” Viall told Bristowe.

“Right. Well because we kind of acted that way. OK by we I mean me,” replied the former bachelorette.

Kaitlyn Bristowe was trying to protect her relationship with Shawn Booth

Bristowe told Viall that she acted towards him the way she did (giving him the silent treatment and making jabs at him in the press) because she was trying to protect her relationship with her season winner Shawn Booth.

“Look, I was like totally trying to protect a relationship and maybe it was too far that way. I could have just dropped it. But it was such a lingering thing over my head all the time from the show and I always felt so much shame around you,” she said.

Viall told Bristowe that he empathized because his Bachelor season winner, Vanessa Grimaldi, had some leftover feelings of animosity towards her fellow Bachelor contestants, just as Booth did for Viall.

“I can relate in the sense that when I ended up with Vanessa she, for different reasons, she didn’t get along with Rachel and Raven. But I guess we didn’t last as long because I suddenly was like, ‘I’m sorry, I’m not gonna like–that’s an insane point of view,’” he shared.

Viall continued: “I would try to defend her. I would definitely not defend her the way she wanted me to defend her. And that was, quite honestly, one of our biggest problems early on that we fought very much so where it was like ‘Why don’t you have my back?’ and like I do but this is an insane argument.”

Kaitlyn Bristowe’s comments about Nick Viall in the press

Viall told Bristowe that he’d read “comments” asking “Did you hear what Kaitlyn or Shawn said about Nick?” that would cause him to be “riddled with anxiety.”

Bristowe explained to her Bachelorette runner-up that almost every interview that she and Booth did involved questions about Viall.

“It’s so hard because every single interview we did, anybody who had any questions, you were always the question. Which gets annoying for everybody. And we don’t know how to answer because–I don’t know, I was just so protective of him and his feelings that I would be like ‘Oh, what would he want me to say?’ which is so weird because that’s not like me. But I really, really, truly, deeply loved him and I wanted to protect him,” she said.

Nick Viall is no longer Kaitlyn Bristowe’s ‘joke’

Bristowe told The Viall File listeners that when she and her runner-up spoke on the phone about appearing on each other’s podcasts, Viall asked her: “Why am I always the joke?”

“I was like, ‘Yeah, I don’t know.’ And you were like, ‘Did I do anything wrong?’ and I was like, ‘No.’ You were like, ‘Can you get a new joke?’ It was the best. I was like, touché, I will get a new joke,” she said.
