Nicole Murphy Goes on ‘The Wendy Williams Show’ To Explain The Kiss Photos
Two months after being in the center of a photo scandal with director Antoine Fuqua, Nicole Murphy surfaced on The Wendy Williams Show to explain her side of things. Audience members in the studio and at home wanted to know the story behind the kissing photos and what’s happened since the news broke back in July.
Murphy, the ex-wife of Eddie Murphy, was radiant when she walked onto the stage but admitted she was a bit apprehensive about coming to see the gossip queen. After some small talk about her family and work projects, Williams went after the hot topic. What was the deal in Italy?
A recap of what happened
Photos of married Fuqua, 52, and Murphy went viral online after the pair were caught smooching several times while poolside at an Italian hotel. In one photo, the two were standing up locking lips while holding cups of espresso. In another, they were seated and kissing.
A witness told ET that Fuqua and Murphy were “relaxed, happy … they seem very friendly and at ease with one another.” After the scandal hit the internet, Murphy allegedly released two statements.
One said that the two were family friends who ran into each other and shared a friendly hello, and a separate one via TMZ to share an apology to her family and Fuqua’s.
Fuqua never commented, but his wife’s social media accounts became so flooded with fan outrage—on her behalf—that she shut them down.
Wendy Williams jumped right into it
Williams, not one to avoid awkward or touchy subject matter, wasn’t afraid to get down to brass tacks with Murphy. She would not allow her to be coy or evasive while trying to downplay the situation.
Williams leaned in, leaned out, and made faces while discussing “the kiss” and evidence that left Murphy’s reasoning open to questioning.
Murphy stated that she and Fuqua happened to be in town at the same time and contrary to reports, she is not a family friend of his or his wife, actress Lela Rochon. She went on to say it was early in the morning and she was out of it when she saw Fuqua, citing the espresso in her hand.
“It was a frozen-in-time thing…Trust me, I wish it didn’t happen. It was a moment where I should’ve thought more through the situation. Made better judgments. It’s something I apologized for.”
When challenged on the second kiss, Murphy said it was a mistake and her understanding of Fuqua’s single/married status wasn’t what she thought it was. After some friendly banter with Williams, Murphy apologized to Rochon (calling her darling) and reiterated that she made a mistake.
People don’t believe Murphy’s explanation on The Wendy Williams Show’
If you watch the video of the show, you’ll see audience reactions ranging from forgiving to side-eyes and grimaces. Clearly, people are questioning her sincerity and her version of events. One woman even shook her head in disagreement.
Online, Holly Robinson-Peete popped over to gossip site, The Shade Room, to comment on Murphy’s account of things. To everyone’s amusement, she left a bunch of Pinocchio emojis.
While many have said that she can’t shoulder all the blame, Murphy is still being dragged on social media for her actions. We’re not sure if she’ll ever be able to live this down. Neither Rochon nor Fuqua have commented.
