Actress Nina Dobrev made a name for herself playing Mia Jones on Degrassi: The Next Generation. And Elena Gilbert on the teen hit series, The Vampire Diaries. Since leaving the show, Dobrev has tried her hand at other genres and acting, including comedy. She proved she had the acting chops to be versatile as Dobrev made an appearance in comedy series Robot Chicken and film Dog Days.
Now she stars in CBS sitcom, Fam playing a character that appears to be the polar opposite of her portrayal of Elena on The Vampire Diaries. Dobrev recently turned 30, but the young actress has already amassed a significant fortune from her acting career. So what is her net worth today? And what makes shooting Fam so scary for Dobrev?
She’s been building her career from a young age
Dobrev broke into acting in her early teens starting with television movie, Playing House in 2006. She quickly racked up a number of made for TV films until she landed Degrassi: Minis in 2007. From there she continued her role as Mia Jones in Degrassi Goes Hollywood and then Degrassi: The Next Generation.
At that time she was also cast in CW’s The Vampire Diaries. From 2009 through 2017 she portrayed Elena Gilbert. And fell in love with vampire brothers, transitioned into a vampire herself and then found eternal bliss with vampire antagonist turned protagonist, Damon Salvatore.
She left The Vampire Diaries although the show continued. But returned for the series conclusion. But once the series wrapped, Dobrev began to explore new acting territory. This included starring in the reboot of film, Flatliners and adorable puppy-inspired film, Dog Days. Dobrev has 13 awards to her name, which includes three People’s Choice Awards. Her current net worth stands at about $10 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
New series ‘Fam’ breaks ground for Dobrev
Although Dobrev has successfully nailed comedy before, Fam proves to be a challenge for the star. One aspect of the comedy series that basically “terrifies” Dobrev is that the show is shot live. “The very first live show was absolutely terrifying, and I felt like I was going to die,” she told W. “I don’t think I’ve ever felt that much anxiety in my life.”
“But with every show after that, it went away a little bit more and more, to the point where it is still there,” she continued. “I fear the day when I have zero anxiety, because that’s what makes me feel alive.… I’ve always wanted to do theater, and hopefully this is a stepping stone toward achieving that goal. Maybe next time we’re hanging out over drinks in the city, I’ll be in a play.”
She based her ‘Fam’ character on this iconic sitcom persona
Dobrev’s character, Clem is loosely similar to hot mess, Rachel Green from Friends. Dobrev told TVLine she drew her “vibe and aesthetic” from Friends. “We told the wardrobe designer that we wanted the looks to be effortless,” she said, “kind of like Rachel’s were.”
And like Rachel Green from Friends, Clem from Fam evolves and develops. “I was terrified when we filmed that first episode, but as the season progressed I got much more comfortable and really began to understand who Clem is,” she explained to TVLine. “She evolves a lot as the season goes on. If you like the pilot, it only gets better from there.”
