Nina West made herstory at the Emmy’s, walking the purple carpet in drag

She’s season 11’s Miss Congeniality and a fan favorite, even among celebrities. This year, Nina West made history as the first person to attend the Emmy’s in full drag. She attended the award show in conjunction with RuPaul’s reality competition series, entitled RuPaul’s Drag Race.

“I’m going to the Emmys, I’m going to the Primetime Emmys! It’s kind of crazy. It’s weird to be a part of this, and I keep saying this, but it’s really strange after nine years of auditioning [for the show] to be part of this global phenomenon and be one of RuPaul’s girls, and share that message and tell that story all over the world,” Nina West said during an interview with Cosmopolitan before the award show.

I’m lucky enough to kind of be under her wig and go out into the world and celebrate her message, which is a platform I also believe in,” Nina West continued. “‘Everybody say love!’ That’s a huge thing that we all have an opportunity to share, and especially in these times where people are so angry and angst-filled, the show is such a bright light of hope. It’s great to be a part of that.”

RuPaul’s Drag Race won multiple awards at the 2019 Emmy’s

This year, RuPaul’s Drag Race also made history, winning the Emmy Award for Best Reality-Competition Program. The series triumphed over shows like The Voice, The Amazing Race, and American Ninja Warrior. RuPaul earned his fourth consecutive Emmy Award for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program.

Additionally, RuPaul’s Drag Race won Outstanding Costumes for Variety, Nonfiction, or Reality Programming as well as Outstanding Hairstyling for a Multi-Camera Series or Special. Although the show’s spin-off series, RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked, was nominated in several categories, the unscripted reality show did not win. Not this year, anyway.
