No One Can Tell if Kim Kardashian’s ‘Money-Themed’ Outfit Was a Joke or Not
Most Kardashian fans will agree that, while we love watching Keeping Up with the Kardashians and following their non-stop drama, the family doesn’t exactly have a firm grasp on reality. Because of that, fans are used to a certain level of ignorance when it comes to their privilege — but every once in a while, their obliviousness makes us think “this has to be a joke.”
Fashion statement or privileged brag?
A Reddit user recently reminded fans of a 2018 paparazzi photo of Kim Kardashian West donning a money-printed outfit from head-to-toe — all the way down to her crystal Judith Leiber purse that retails for almost $4,000. The post prompted fans to wonder if the outfit was meant to be an ironic nod to her extravagant wealth, or if Kim really thought the choice was appropriate.
This controversial outfit came from designer Jeremy Scott’s Fall line in 2001. Kim Kardashian West wore the ensemble to an event for her friend Anastasia Soare’s makeup line, Anastasia Beverly Hills. Unfortunately, Kim never posted photos of the notorious outfit on any of her social media pages; however, she did share a video the outfit in a now-lapsed Instagram story and said, “What do you do when your friend sells her company for a couple billion? You wear a full money [outfit] and throw her a party.”
Fans find the outfit choice distasteful
Comments on the Reddit thread pointed out that the Anastasia event was money-themed, “This was a money theme party to celebrate Anastasia Beverly Hills selling a stake in her company making her company value around 3 billion [dollars].” Another user suggested that Kim’s outfit choice was intentionally ironic, “The door has money decorations. This has to be a tongue in cheek outfit.”
Despite the fact that she may have dressed according to theme, the majority of users on the thread still don’t appreciate Kim’s choice of apparel. The creator of the thread responded to the party theme clarification stating, “The context doesn’t make it better for me at all. Celebrities flaunting their hoarding of wealth is gross and I’m not here for it.” Another user quoted Kourtney Kardashian’s iconic line, “Kim, people are dying.” Regardless of whether Kim dressed for the party theme, many find the entire situation tasteless and pretentious.
Dramatic displays of wealth aren’t exactly rare for the Kardashian-West family
This ostentatious outfit was not the first time the socialite’s money flaunting has sparked public controversy. One of Kim Kardashian’s grandest displays of wealth was her wedding to rapper Kanye West in 2014. E! News reported that the couple spent a grand total of $2.8 million on the event — and that’s not including money spent on flights and hotels for their guests to attend the Paris wedding.
Most recently, both of the Kardashian-Wests shamelessly paraded their privilege on Twitter. On June 29, Kanye tweeted a photo of a “still life” he made for Kim to congratulate her on officially becoming a billionaire, “You’ve weathered the craziest storms and now God is shining on you and our family.” That same day, Kim posted two pictures of her daughter, North West’s, horse — notably misspelling the breed name, ‘Friesian’. “Meet North’s Freesian horse. We have 14 gorgeous Freesians on the ranch.” This breed of horses typically costs anywhere from $25,000 to $30,000.
Her money-printed outfit is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Kim Kardashian’s expensive and flashy exploits. To their credit, the Kardashian-Wests have been known to donate a portion of their wealth to charity — which she verified by tweeting a photo of the clearly authentic ‘certificate of donation’. Regardless of your opinion on her choices, no one can deny that Kim’s antics are entertaining.
