It’s a Valentine’s Day disaster! Those little heart-shaped conversation candies –Sweethearts Candies won’t be available in stores this February. Though they’re not the tastiest treats in the drug store candy aisle, these little candies were a staple of Feb. 14, especially for little ones who exchanged cards and treats with their classmates at school.
Whether you eat the sugary treats or not, there’s something nostalgic about seeing the Sweethearts Candies and their messages like “U R Cute” and “Hug Me” each winter. Sadly, that tradition is going to have to be broken this year. Here is the real reason those chalky textured tiny hearts with their whimsical sayings aren’t being sold in stores on Valentine’s Day in 2019.
Why won’t Sweethearts Candy be available this year?
The reason no one is going to be able to get their hands on Sweethearts Candies this year is because of a delayed business deal. New England Confectionery Company (Necco) the company that originally manufactured the beloved candies shut their doors in July 2018 and told all of their factory workers not to come to work.
Luckily, the company was eventually sold to Spangler Candy Company in Sept. 2018. However, since it was so late in the year, it was way too late for Spangler to step in and try and make all of the heart-shaped candies that it needed for an end of January ship date. This can’t be good for the company’s bottom line.
When will Sweethearts be available again?
Luckily, the candies should be back on store shelves in 2020. Kirk Vashaw, the CEO of Spangler Candy Company which now makes the sweets released a statement saying, “We are looking forward to announcing the relaunch of Sweethearts for the 2020 Valentine’s Day season.”
What flavors are Sweethearts Candies?
Since we all eat the Sweetheart Candies in handfuls, you probably never noticed each colored candy has its own flavor. In each box of Sweethearts, you can find white wintergreen, purple grape, orange orange, green lime, pink cherry, and yellow banana. Each one of the candies also has a cutesy saying on it like, “Let’s Kiss,” “Miss You,” and “Cutie Pie.”
What are Sweethearts Candies made of?
Necco started manufacturing Sweethearts Candies way back in 1866. The little sugar bombs are made out of sugar, corn syrup, gelatin, gums, coloring, and flavoring.
According to Necco, the candies are made by a machine that mixes all the ingredients together until it forms a dough. Then, the dough is fed into a machine where it’s pressed flat. From there, the dough is cut into hearts and stamped by another machine. Finally, the conversation hearts are dried for 30 minutes and packaged.
What is the most popular Valentine’s Day candy?
Though most people adore those red heart-shaped boxes filled with chocolates, chocolate isn’t the most popular Valentine’s Day candy in the United States.
