Born in Alabama in 1972, Octavia Spencer was one of seven children. Her father died when she was only 13 years old, and her mother worked as a maid to support her family.

Determined to make a difference and to create a good life for herself, Spencer went on to attend Auburn University, where she eventually graduated with a degree in English. In the mid-nineties, Spencer made the move to California, intent on pursuing a career in acting.

She appeared in a wide variety of movies throughout the late nineties and early 2000s, including A Time to Kill, opposite Sandra Bullock, Bad Santa, Coach Carter, Spider-Man, and Big Momma’s House.

Spencer also worked in television as well, making guest appearances in TV shows like The Big Bang Theory. In spite of her lengthy resume, it wasn’t until 2011 that Spencer really started to receive recognition for her work, after she starred in The Help. For her appearance in the film, she was honored with a Golden Globe Award.

Since then, Spencer has been unstoppable, acting in movies, television, and stage projects.

Just as Octavia Spencer was landing her first few film roles, another star was riding a wave of audience adulation. Keanu Reeves first started acting in the eighties and rose to stardom when he starred in the hit action movie, Speed. Reeves earned acclaim for his work as an action star, and by the late nineties, he was one of the biggest stars in the world.

Reeves is also well known for his legendarily kind nature. Many stories exist about Reeves’ willingness to help others, and his generous ways. Reeves has been known to give up his seat on the subway to those who might need it and has donated millions of dollars over the years to charitable foundations.

Many have praised Reeves for how respectful he is to his female co-stars. Octavia Spencer has her own Keanu Reeves story, one that has now become legendary.

How did Keanu Reeves help Octavia Spencer?

In October 2020, Octavia Spencer gave a revealing interview, where she shared an experience that she had with Hollywood nice-guy Keanu Reeves, over two decades ago.

“It was about 25 years ago, The Matrix had just come out. I was on my way to pick up a script to read for an audition. So I wasn’t really wearing any underwear, I was wearing sweats and my favorite college football t-shirt. It was worn, it was see-through, no underwear,” Spencer stated, according to CinemaBlend.

She went on to say that her car was covered with bird poop because she routinely parked underneath trees. Spencer’s car broke down right in the middle of an affluent neighborhood.

Just as she thought she was completely out of luck, a man on a motorcycle rode up to save the day — Spencer recognized him right away as Keanu Reeves.

“I, of course, was freaking out. He, you know, ‘You need some help?’ And I’m like, ‘Sure.’ So I thought he was going to get into the car, I got behind the car to push. He said, ‘No, I’m going to push you out of the street, you get in.’ So he pushed me out of the street, and then of course, when people saw it was Keanu Reeves helping me, everybody came down to help.”

Reeves and Spencer have maintained their connection over the years, with the actress recently revealing that he called her to wish her happy birthday.
