The 1 Way ‘One Day at a Time’ Will Be Different On Pop TV vs. Netflix

The sitcom One Day at a Time, which once aired on Netflix, has switched over to Pop TV. The change from a streaming service to a traditional network can come with issues, but so far, there’s only one major difference that we know about. Read on to learn more.

‘One Day at a Time’ aired for three seasons on Netflix

The series, which is actually a reboot of a 1975 one of the same name, first began airing on Netflix in 2017. It stars Justine Machado as Penelope, a single mother, nurse, and veteran who is raising her two teenage kids after her divorce, along with some help from her mother and their landlord, Schneider.

One Day at a Time was immediately well-received by viewers and critics alike. The sitcom received a second season pick up and then a third before it was canceled in early 2019.

Netflix kept mum about the details as to why it was canceling One Day at a Time, as it doesn’t traditionally reveal its viewership numbers. The streaming service put out various statements about the decision, but the fans weren’t exactly pleased.

A campaign to save One Day at a Time was quickly launched. It was aided by showrunner Gloria Calderón Kellett, the cast, and even critics, all who attempted to use their clout to get it a pick up on another network.

‘ODAAT’ was picked up by Pop TV

It took a few months, but the efforts of all involved were not in vain. On June 27, 2019, Pop TV (the network that is home to Schitt’s Creek) announced that it had picked One Day at a Time up for a fourth season. And naturally, the internet rejoiced.

After the initial excitement (which was shared by the cast, creators, and many other celebrities as well as the fans), there was even more to celebrate: The show also received numerous award nominations and even a few wins. Clearly, Pop TV made the right decision.

Say goodbye to the theme song

But not all news is good news. Thre are always compromises in show business. And while it appears that One Day at a Time Season 4 will go off without a hitch, fans were a little sad to hear about one fairly minor change to the series.

Unlike many sitcoms these days, One Day At A Time Seasons 1-3 have a lengthy opening theme song and credits. However, as Kellett explained on Twitter, something had to be cut for time in the move to a regular network. So the theme song was almost entirely eliminated.

When does ‘ODAAT’ Season 4 begin?

It has been announced that One Day at a Time Season 4 will begin airing on March 24, 2020, on Pop TV. On Netflix, each entire 13-episode season was dropped all at once, but that won’t be the case on the network. Still, we expect that fans will enjoy the series in its new format.
