Despite the profound influence of the MCU movies, you don’t see them quoted too often like classic movies of yore. While a few lines from Avengers: Endgame have recently stuck out, it’s not often when you see a Marvel movie quote pull at the heartstrings.
There is one memorable line going back a couple of years to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and the step-sibling rivalry between Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Nebula (Karen Gillan). If you have yet to catch up on these characters: Gamora and Nebula are adopted daughters of Thanos. Both escape his clutches, but Nebula and Gamora have a falling out to a point where former attempts to kill latter.
One pivotal showdown scene with the two has the above classic line we think might go into the annals of film history.
Fans agree on this line being the most emotional Marvel moment
Yes, there was plenty of emotion in Avengers: Endgame, with Tony Stark’s final words bringing a flood of tears. Before Marvel went there, though, the familial relationship between Gamora and Nebula in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies has always been complex.
Despite not being blood sisters (and Nebula being a Luphomoid/cyborg), the two consider themselves real family. However, some serious bad blood develops between the two. Outside of both becoming Guardians to fight against their step-father, Thanos, Nebula reaches a point where she seeks out Gamora to kill her.
It all comes to a dramatic head in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 during the famous Battle on Ego’s Planet. All events leading up to that point would have had any Marvel fan wishing for Nebula’s demise. After all, she is called an evil stepsister and known for her psychopathic tendencies.
She almost succeeds in killing Gamora in the Ego desert during an action-packed moment where Nebula swoops in with her ship and begins shooting. Afterward, we saw one of the most human moments in the entire MCU franchise.
A true sister to sister moment
If you re-watch the fight scene on Ego’s Planet, it’s truly stunning how the production team put it together. You also see just how crazy Nebula is and how adamant she was in wanting to kill Gamora at the soonest possible moment.
While you can argue Gamora surviving those ship blasts seems impossible in a more logical world, we ultimately see her rescue Nebula from latter’s crashed ship before it explodes in a massive ball of flame.
With both wounded from the fighting, Nebula almost plunges a dagger into her sister’s heart before relenting. The line “I just wanted a sister!” from Nebula seems to come out of nowhere, yet hits the viewer over the head with emotion at how these two truly were family. Fans on Reddit have recently deemed this scene a standout.
The scene also unfolds very similarly to real sister relationships: Fighting over being the one who always wants to win.
Marvel does dig into human psychology once in a while
Let’s give some kudos to Gillan, who plays Nebula in the Guardians movies. Her acting in the above scene with Saldana is very believable as if tapping into her own life or someone she knows. It seems to prove how deep the actors go into these characters to make them vivid on the big screen.
Thankfully, Nebula survives after reconciling with her sister. As we all saw in Avengers: Endgame, she also became a huge part of the time-travel plot and created a paradox of killing her past self from the 2014 alternate reality. Many were confused by this, though the good news is it means Nebula is alive for Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3.
Gamora is also thought to be out there somewhere, meaning it’s a good bet Gamora and Nebula will meet up again. Whether it’s like a heartfelt Thanksgiving family reunion will remain to be seen. One thing for sure is family sibling rivalry never really ends if at least this case being less intense so the sisters live to see another day.
