Oprah Says Meghan Markle Texted Her ‘Intention’ Prior to CBS Interview

It has been over a month since the bombshell interview between Oprah Winfrey, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and Prince Harry first aired on television, but fans still can’t stop talking about it. In the interview, Meghan and Prince Harry levied some pretty damaging accusations against the royal family, putting the royals on the defense and enthralling everyone who watched the sit-down. While Oprah herself masterfully handled the interview, the host and pop culture icon has since revealed that even she was surprised by many of the revelations that Meghan shared.

From the moment that Prince Harry and Meghan revealed in January 2020 that they would be stepping away from their roles as senior members of the royal family, fans have been anxious to know the rest of the story — including why they felt the need to step away from the royal circle in the first place. With so many conflicting stories circulating in the press, it was impossible for many to discern the real truth.

When it was announced that Meghan and Prince Harry would finally be opening up to acclaimed journalist Oprah, in a major March 2021 interview, pop culture fans all over the world rejoiced. In the days leading up to the interview, media outlets reported that the royal family was “nervous” about what Meghan and Prince Harry could reveal — and as it turned out, they had good reason to be wary.

Meghan dropped some major bombshells in the interview with Oprah. One of the most damning accusations was Meghan’s allegations that the royal family exhibited racist behavior, and had conversations with Prince Harry related to what Archie Harrison’s skin color would be “and what that would look like.”

Meghan also set the record straight about Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, saying the royal had made her cry in the days leading up to the big royal wedding to Prince Harry — even though she did admit that Kate later apologized.

Additionally, Meghan revealed that she suffered from suicidal thoughts, and that when the royal family was told about that, they dismissed her requests for help. “I said that I needed to go somewhere to get help. And I said that I’d never felt this way before. I need to go somewhere. And I was told that I couldn’t, because it wouldn’t be good for the institution,” the Duchess of Sussex revealed.

In the days after the interview, the royal family reacted by releasing a statement, admitting that “recollections may vary” about some of the events Meghan and Prince Harry detailed. Rumors also started swirling, rumors that stated Prince Charles was furious with his son, and for the way that he portrayed his relationship with the royal family.

There’s no doubt that the interview was shocking — but ultimately, even Oprah herself was shocked by the way that the couple committed to laying everything bare.

In a recent interview on the streaming show TalkshopLive, Oprah said she had connected with Meghan via text prior to the interview, in order to find out what the Duchess of Sussex’s “intention” for the big interview was.

“Our shared intention was the truth,” Winfrey revealed. “They wanted to be able to tell their story and tell it in such a way that allowed them to be truthful as possible.”

Still, the host wasn’t prepared for everything that they shared: “I was surprised at the amount of, you know, literally with that thing that’s now become a meme, that’s like, ‘What?’ I’m like, ‘What? You’re going there? You’re going all the way there?'”
