‘Orange Is the New Black’ Season 5: 15 Secrets From the Cast
We’re getting excited for the return of Orange Is the New Black, with the premiere of Season 5 coming to Netflix June 9. This is definitely a highly anticipated season because the previous one ended in the mishandling of a tragic murder, and the inmates getting a rare upper hand.
We left off with Daya pointing a gun at a correctional officer, and what seemed like the entire prison shouting for her to shoot him. But we have yet to find out if she pulls the trigger. A trailer and teaser have revealed some things about the new season. But the cast has been talking as well.
The Cheat Sheet caught up with Kimiko Glenn at the Tribeca Film Festival and got a few exclusive tidbits of what’s to come. We also found out what other cast members have said in the past. So what have they revealed about the dramatic new season? Here are 15 behind-the-scenes Season 5 secrets.
1. This new season has the cast feeling a lot of emotions
Q: So how are you feeling about the new season of Orange Is the New Black coming out?
Kimiko Glenn told The Cheat Sheet: I’m feeling a lot [laughs]. I’m feeling a lot. I’m anticipating some big reactions because it’s unlike any other season. I don’t know if they revealed any footage or any teasers other than it takes place over three days. But it’s an intense season and it’s extremely different and I’m just excited to see people’s reactions. And I’m excited to see it played out myself because I’m kind of a fan of the show too.
2. Soso will still be in a tough emotional place next season
Q: What is this new season going to do for your character? Are we going to see her starting to rebuild or is she going to be in the grieving process?
Glenn: Well I can’t really say much to that but it does take place over a few days so, you know, wounds are still fresh and that’s about all I’m sure I can say about it.
3. But chances are this season will stick to the show’s dark comedy
Q: What do you think is the mood of this season? It started off as a comedy, but a dark comedy, and last season it seemed to get even more serious by talking about topical things like police brutality.
Glenn: I mean injustice is the theme in general throughout the show so it’s just one of those things that will always kind of linger. But yeah, I mean also to be honest every season when it comes out like on the page to the screen there’s such a difference and so I can never tell. I can never tell like what it’s going to read like if it’s going to be darker or like on the lighter side, you never know.
4. The future of Soso’s other relationships is unclear
Q: How are Soso’s relationships going to be affected by what has happened? We saw her get closer to Poussey’s friends, but is that going to continue?
Glenn: Well that’s the hope anyway but I think there’s far bigger fish to fry than just her own struggle. You know obviously that’s huge but I think for the entire prison it’s huge and for that friend group it’s huge. And I think there’s going to be a lot happening.
5. Other cast members confirm the season will take place over three days
Actress Danielle Brooks also confirmed the big change in the new season when it comes to the time frame. It looks like it will be the most dramatic season yet. “[I]t will be very detailed, very intense, and you better get ready,” she told E! News. “Get your popcorn, your tissues, everything.”
6. It will end with another cliffhanger
As if last season’s ending wasn’t already torture, we’re in for another big cliffhanger. “It’s going to be great,” Jackie Cruz told Entertainment Tonight. “It’s things that you haven’t seen before, a lot of surprises, and we’re left with a cliffhanger. It’s amazing. It just keeps getting better. [Writer] Jenji Kohan is a genius.”
7. The stakes are going to be even higher
You probably already guessed things won’t be the same this season, especially with an inmate pointing a gun at one of the officers. “I think the stakes are higher in this season than they have been in a while just by virtue of the compressed time and seeing people in compressed circumstance really raises the stakes,” said Taylor Schilling, according to E! News.
8. And it will definitely be intense
The one thing multiple cast members are saying is that this season is going to be juicy! “What I can tell you is that I was just as excited as all the fans were to see what happens next,” Laverne Cox told E! News. “When I read it, it was incredible, when we shot it, it was … intense. It’s really, really intense. It manages … as intense as it all is, it still manages to have an irreverence and a spin that is funny and thoughtful.”
9. We will be getting more Lolly in the new episodes
Lolly had a very moving back story revealed, so some fans are probably hoping she will be back. Actress Lori Petty is pretty confident it’ll happen. As she told The Hollywood Reporter:
Here’s what I assume, and this is because it’s all about me, right? — we go into psych and Mr. Healy was there and I’m screaming and crying. I did some looping and I saw it and it looked great. Then I realize that they built a huge hallway with rooms and a whole set. So I’m thinking it’s going to be: Psych! Starring Lori Petty! I just assumed they’d go to psych, like they go to the SHU. But I’m just making stuff up right now because I don’t know. But I saw the set and that’s what I thought.
10. We’re going to get a lot of answers
Some fans may be alarmed to hear that the 13 episodes will only cover three days. But the cast has assured us that many questions will be answered. “You can expect Jenji [Kohan] will … she will answer a lot of unresolved questions that season four left you with,” Uzo Aduba told E! News.
11. The prison will probably be on lock down
There were also photos released of the new season, and it looks like law enforcement might be trying to take back the prison. That, or Daya could be also forcing other prisoners to get in line since she has some power. Either way, it should be a pretty interesting season.
12. Things might still be going well with Big Boo and Pennsatucky
At first, the two looked like they were just too different to get along. But they have grown closer throughout the show. In new photos released of Season 5, we see the friends working at the commissary. So hopefully this means their friendship is safe this season.
13. Gloria is back at it in the kitchen
In the third photo, we see Gloria talking to someone in the kitchen. It doesn’t give us much, but we know Daya and her group are the ones who were left with the power at the end of Season 4. Maybe Gloria is allowed to get back to her job along with a few others during the crazy lockdown.
14. A trailer has already been released
Now that the new season is getting closer, we are getting some real footage of the new episodes! It looks like the show will be picking up only seconds after the last scene of Season 4. Vause and Chapman are officially aware that the prison is in the middle of a riot.
15. There was also a teaser trailer
— Orange Is the New… (@OITNB) February 8, 2017
It’s not much, but it’s definitely something! The teaser trailer shows some of the many faces we know and love of the cast. Of course, it also reminds us of the crazy ending of last season.
