Oscars 2020: Will Billie Eilish Reveal Her James Bond Theme During Her Academy Awards Performance?
Unless you’ve been living under a rock throughout 2019, you’re probably extremely familiar with singer/songwriter Billie Eilish and her ubiquitous hit “Bad Guy.” That tune instantly established Eilish as one of the year’s biggest music stars.
So her recent Grammy wins probably felt like the culmination of a career that exploded onto the airwaves and into the mainstream. But believe it or not, Eilish might have an even bigger year ahead. For one, she’s performing the theme song for the upcoming James Bond film No Time to Die. At just 18 years old, Eilish is the youngest person to ever write and perform a song for the long-running franchise.
Moreover, the Academy Awards announced Eilish will perform during the show. Naturally, fans are wondering if Eilish plans to debut her Bond tune.
The singer is scheduled to perform at the Oscars
Toward the end of January 2020, the Academy Awards revealed Eilish will deliver a “special performance” live during the 2020 Oscars. However, no further details were given about what she’ll sing or how it will play into the ceremony. The academy had previously announced a list of performers that includes Elton John, Idina Menzel, and Randy Newman.
The level of secrecy surrounding Eilish’s Oscars performance has led many to speculate about what she’ll be singing. Often, the Oscars telecast limits performances to the Best Original Song nominees. But since the academy already confirmed the performers for those tracks, we have no clue what the academy and Eilish are planning for Feb. 9, 2020.
Could she be performing her mysterious James Bond theme?
Eilish was only confirmed to perform the new Bond theme a couple of weeks prior to the news of her Oscars appearance. This timing raised more than a few eyebrows. Could the two career milestones be related? It’s very possible. But the Academy Awards isn’t normally where an artist would debut a brand-new song.
Perhaps Eilish is participating in a musical tribute of some kind. The Oscars definitely love to look back on cinema history. Remember when Lady Gaga performed selections from The Sound of Music in 2015? Eilish could be doing something similar in her performance.
The academy just announced Janelle Monáe will also make “a special performance” at Oscars 2020. Unlike Eilish, Monáe doesn’t have any mysterious new music to drop. So it’s possible both ladies will be performing a medley of past Oscar-winning songs, or one might even sing over the “In Memoriam” montage.
Billie Eilish could return to the Oscars in 2021 as a nominee
Ironically, if Eilish does decide to unveil her new James Bond tune live on the Academy Awards, it could be the first of two consecutive years she appears onstage. The last two Bond themes — Adele’s “Skyfall” and Sam Smith’s “The Writing’s on the Wall” — went on to win Oscars. So Eilish might wind up coming back to the show in 2021 to perform her nominated song, per Oscar tradition.
Of course, we likely won’t know what Eilish has planned until she actually takes the Oscar stage. Considering her success to date, we’ll bet she has something memorable planned. Fans have been able to count on the singer to tackle a wide variety of important topics. So we imagine she’ll ensure her Oscar debut remains true to her artistic vision. We’ll find out soon enough, as Hollywood’s biggest night is creeping ever closer.
The 92nd Academy Awards will air on ABC on Feb. 9, 2020.
