Sam Heughan plays Jamie Fraser on the hit series Outlander. Season 5 is less than a month away and fans are more than a little excited about it. Season 5 will premiere on February 16 and it can’t get here fast enough for those of us who are tired of Droughtlander.
It may surprise some loyal Outlander fans to know what Heughan considers his favorite storyline in the series. Read on to learn more about it. There are spoilers ahead for the upcoming season of Outlander.
Season 5 will mean choices for Jamie Fraser
Heughan and his on-screen wife, Claire Fraser, who is played by Caitriona Balfe, spoke with Parade.com about the upcoming season and what it has in store for eager viewers at home.
Season 5 will involve Jamie being asked by Governor Tryon (Tim Downie) to take down the Regulators. Jamie’s godfather Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) is in league with them, so this puts Jamie in a rather tight spot. What will he do? Will he hunt down Murtagh, or will he risk it all and defy the governor only to possibly lose his home on Fraser’s Ridge in the process? Jamie’s choices will affect everyone, not just himself. He’s going to struggle in the upcoming season to make the right decision for his family.
What’s Sam Heughan’s favorite storyline in the series?
So, what’s Heughan’s favorite storyline in the series? It’s actually one that isn’t included in the books.
“The short answer is you’ll have to watch to find out,” Heughan tells Parade.com. “This is a storyline that isn’t in the books, and it’s probably one of the biggest deviations from the books. Obviously, the whole Murtagh surviving Culloden [was not in the books], but it’s been brilliantly played out this season. For me, it’s definitely my favorite storyline for my character to play.”
Jamie and Murtagh have a strong bond
Jamie’s relationship with Murtagh is important to his character development. Murtagh has been the father figure Jamie needed and he was always a strong backbone for him to rely on.
“Jamie’s always had this father figure in his godfather,” Heughan continued. “He’s always been this presence, who has guided him, and we see some great flashbacks this season to when Jamie was a child. So, for Jamie to have to break that bond and put Murtagh at a distance to protect Fraser’s Ridge is very hard for Jamie to do. It is played out. I can’t really tell you an awful lot much more because it is a great storyline. It’s a wonderful piece of writing and, certainly, for Jamie, a very tough situation to be in.”
Could Jamie sport a British redcoat in season 5?
Sam Heughan spoke with the Television Critics Association on January 14 and he revealed some information that still has fans talking. The new trailers for season 5 show Jamie sporting an actual British redcoat.
“So for him to have to wear a red coat, it’s a storyline that is not so much in the book, but the writers did a great job in sort of really digging into that storyline,” Heughan revealed. “We see Jamie have to sort of go against everything he stands for, for the greater good, for the good of the people he’s trying to protect. Yeah, so to see Jamie Fraser in a red coat for me was kind of full circle and kind of terrifying at the same time.”
It’s obvious that Jamie Fraser will face some difficult choices in the upcoming season of Outlander. Fans can’t wait to check back in with Jamie and his wife Claire on Fraser’s Ridge.
