‘Outlander’ Season 6: Premiere Release Date, Cast, Filming Update
Outlander fans, rejoice! There is finally an update on Outlander Season 6. On June 1, the STARZ series announced key season 6 details, from the plot to casting to the season’s length. And the premiere date was finally announced as well. But prepare for a long wait.
‘Outlander’ Season 6 filmed in Scotland
Outlander Season 6 has been filming since January 2021. It will finish filming the first week of June, according to a press release. Seasons 4, 5, and 6 of Outlander were set in colonial North Carolina, but the show films in Scotland between a large film studio built for the show and its exterior locations. Some scenes were filmed in North Carolina, but no actors were involved.
“The view of Fraser’s Ridge that we see is made of a combination of footage from a wood in Scotland and a ‘plate shot’ of North Carolina itself,” the official Outlander Community website says.
Executive producer Maril Davis said in the official Outlander podcast it takes four months to prepare for each season before filming even starts. She said season 1 was easiest to complete because Diana Gabaldon’s writing “just translated really well.” And executive producer Matthew B. Roberts said season 5 episode 9 was the hardest to film because of the buffalo scene. But filming during the pandemic brought about new obstacles.
‘Outlander’ Season 6 will come out in ‘early 2022’
Because of the pandemic, Outlander Season 6 will only be eight episodes long. Roberts commented on the season length in a statement on World Outlander Day on June 1. He said:
“We are excited to get into the editing room to work on bringing the fans one step closer to reuniting with the family back on Fraser’s Ridge. Filming in 2021 has presented an unprecedented set of challenges which led us to the decision to truncate the season in order to bring the fans the most vibrant and dynamic season as soon as possible. Dinna fash, we will then film an extended season 7 with 16 episodes next year as life returns to normalcy.”
Yes, you read that correctly. Outlander Season 7 will be 16 episodes long. The last time Outlander had a 16-episode run was season 1, which debuted in August 2014.
Season 6 might have taken six months to film, but it wasn’t fast enough for the show to premiere in 2021. The season 6 premiere will air in “early 2022” and will be 90 minutes long.
‘Outlander’ introduces the Christies in season 6
The upcoming season is based on Gabaldon’s A Breath of Snow and Ashes, the sixth Outlander book.
“The Frasers strive to maintain peace and flourish within a society which – as Claire knows all too well – is unwittingly marching towards Revolution,” the STARZ season 6 synopsis states. It continues:
“Against this backdrop, which heralds the birth of the new American nation, Claire and Jamie have built a home together at Fraser’s Ridge. They must now defend this home – established on land granted to them by the Crown – not only from external forces, but also from the increasing strife and conflict in the community within their care. For the Frasers and their immediate family, ‘home’ is more than simply a site in which they live, it is the place where they are laying the foundations for the rest of their lives. If season 4 asked ‘What is home?’ and season 5 asked, ‘What are you willing to do to protect your home?’ then season 6 explores what happens when there is disharmony and division among the inhabitants of the home you’ve created: when you become an outsider, or an ‘outlander,’ so to speak, marginalized and rejected in your own home.”
Mark Lewis-Jones, Alexander Vlahos, and Jessica Reynolds join the cast as Tom, Allan, and Malva Christie. Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan return as Claire and Jamie Fraser. They’re joined by other main cast members Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin, who play Brianna and Roger MacKenzie.
John Bell returns as Young Ian. And based on a World Outlander Day video, it appears Maria Doyle Kennedy will return as Aunt Jocasta, David Berry returns as Lord John Grey, Caitlin O’Ryan is back as Lizzie, and Paul Gorman will be back as Josiah and Kezzie Beardsley.
