‘Outlander’ Star Sam Heughan Is Planning Season 6 Months Before Season 5 Premieres
Sam Heughan and the rest of the cast and crew of Outlander are busy filming season 5 of the hit drama, yet the actor already has his eyes set on the next season. Heughan recently revealed that he has started work on the last couple of episodes of season 5, which is scheduled to premiere six months from now. While filming is ongoing, the production team — which includes Heughan and his co-star, Caitriona Balfe — are already prepping for season 6.
Sam Heughan dishes on season 5 progress
Heughan opened up about the progress on season 5 of Outlander during his podcast with Graham McTavish. The actor revealed that they just started working on the penultimate block of episodes next season, which means filming is about to wrap.
The Outlander star later took to Twitter and shared that they have started working on some night filming. Unfortunately, this means the cast has been dealing with some colder temps, though they definitely have seen worse over the years.
Production for the new season of Outlander started a few months ago — when the weather in Scotland was much nicer. While fans were hopeful that the series would be back this fall, Starz recently pushed back the premiere date to early 2020.
Season 5 of Outlander is based on Diana Gabaldon’s novel, The Fiery Cross. The story continues Claire (Balfe) and Jamie’s (Heughan) journey in the colonies on the eve of the American Revolution.
Heughan preps for season 6 of ‘Outlander’
In addition to filming the new season of Outlander, producers are working on the next project in the lineup. On Twitter, executive producer Matthew B. Roberts revealed that they have started early work on season 6.
The next season of the popular drama is an adaptation of Gabaldon’s book, A Breath of Snow and Ashes. The novel is the sixth book in Gabaldon’s best-selling series.
It is unclear what they have done to prepare for the new season, but hopefully, it helps them get ahead of the curve. Heughan and Balfe were promoted to producers for season 5, so they are likely doing double duty at the moment.
Balfe teases what’s ahead in season 5
While we wait for more news about the upcoming season, Balfe recently teased what’s ahead for Jamie and Claire. This season, the couple will be fighting for stability amid the impending war, a fight that will test their loyalties to the breaking point.
To complicate things even more, Jamie and Claire are now grandparents. The pair’s daughter, Brianna (Sophie Skelton), gave birth to her first child with her husband, Roger (Richard Rankin), at the end of last season.
With a growing family to take care of, Jamie and Claire will need to do everything in their power to keep Fraser’s Ridge safe. According to Carter Matt, Balfe assured fans that season 5 is going to be great and teased that family will be a major theme moving forward.
“This year is really about this family coming to terms with a lot of consequences of things that happened last season … But there’s a settled nature to it and I think it’s a really strong, strong season. We’re almost done which is crazy, but I think people are going to be really happy,” Balfe shared.
When will ‘Outlander’ finish filming season 5?
There is no telling when the cast and crew of Outlander will wrap up filming for the new season, but production will likely continue through the beginning of October at the latest.
One reason why filming has taken so long is because there have been several breaks in production. A good portion of the cast, for example, will be appearing at New York Comic-Con in a few weeks.
While the cast and crew will be answering questions at comic-con, Skelton and Rankin are scheduled to continue filming. This should help producers stay on schedule until the rest of the cast can return.
Fortunately, production should end several weeks before the holiday season, giving the cast a good rest before the premiere. No word yet on when season 6 will begin production, but it likely will not start until after season 5 is over.
With filming ongoing, fans can expect more spoilers to come. This should help fans cope with what is left of Droughtlander, which will not be ending for a few more months.
Season 5 of Outlander is scheduled to premiere February 16 on Starz.
