Palace Staff Reveal Their Favorite Members of the Royal Family
It’s evident the public is obsessed with the “Fab Four” in the royal family; Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle. But recent interviews reveal that the palace staff themselves have a favorite royal — and it’s not who you’d expect.
Those closest to the family are responsible for their schedules, palace maintenance, and plenty of day-to-day duties like surveying the grounds and getting royals from one place to another.
These palace staff members revealed what it’s really like as a commoner in a house of royalty as well as who they favor most. Spoiler alert: it’s a different royal family member than the public likes the best.
The public has spoken: Prince Harry is their favorite
A recent poll across 28 countries revealed that the British royals are generally viewed well. Two are held in the highest regard: Prince Harry and the family’s matriarch, Queen Elizabeth II. The “People’s Prince” spent much of his youth in bars and clubs but only became more likable (and relatable) with each mess-up, Page Six reported.
It was around this time the prince became a “normal” committed soldier, serving his country in Iraq and Afghanistan. His commitment to and love for his fellow veterans later led him to start The Invictus Games, an international multi-sport event that features wheelchair basketball, indoor rowing, and sitting volleyball among others adapted for wounded and sick armed services personnel.
While Harry is beloved by the public (and his wife Meghan Markle), he isn’t the favorite among the palace staff … his grandfather is.
Prince Philip is the most popular among the staff
While the Queen is one of the public’s favorite royals, her husband, Prince Philip, is the staff’s favorite leader. Actor Matt Smith, who portrayed a young Prince Philip on the first two seasons of The Crown, revealed what staff members think about the “naughty” prince (his words, not ours).
“I … found him to be brilliantly funny, very clever, very popular. In the royal house he’s the most popular of all of them. If you’ve talked to any of the staff, Philip’s the one they all love really. I think more than a lot of them, he’s a bit more of a man of the people,” Smith disclosed.
Prince Philip has cut back on his royal appearances as has the queen. He was last seen in May at the Royal Windsor Horse Show following his hip surgery with the queen at his side. The public rarely gets glimpses of Prince Philip, but the staff who interacts with him daily loves him.
“I think he’s quite affable and open by all accounts with the staff. They all love him,” Smith said.
