Pandora Unveils the Most Popular Songs of 2019 and the Decade — and the Top Tracks Might Not Come as a Surprise

2019 was an unforgettable year. Not only because it was a rough year on everyone, but also because it offered some pretty amazing songs.

From pop comebacks to beautiful ballads, the past 12 months did not disappoint when it came to music hits. Many of us are guilty of having these songs on repeat all year round.

Now that the year is coming to a close, Pandora has compiled a list of the top songs of 2019, as well as the top tracks of the decade, and they’re not as surprising as you might expect.

The ‘Top Thumb Hundred’ list for 2019

It is the end of an era and Pandora is commemorating the 2010s with a list of the decade’s top songs.

The platform recently unveiled 20 of the most popular songs of the decade, as well as the year. While some tracks came a surprise, a majority of them were pretty expected.

Let’s start off with the top songs of the year.

According to Pandora, Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” was the most thumbed up track of 2019. It was followed by J. Cole’s “Middle Child,” Ariana Grande’s “7 rings,” and Post Malone’s “Wow,” coming in forth.

Other songs that made the list included Cardi B and Bruno Mars’ “Please Me,” Chris Brown’s “No Guidance,” as well as Khalid’s “Talk.”

While some of the biggest artists in the industry topped this year’s list, a few up and coming musicians weren’t too far behind.

A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, YK Osiris, DaBaby, and Lewis Capaldi’s songs also graced this year’s list. From the looks of things, they’re going to be even more successful once 2020 rolls around.

When it comes to the most popular songs of the decade, many of the top artists of today actually didn’t make this list.

It turns out that The Weeknd’s “Earned It” topped the list as the most thumbed up song of the 2010s, followed by Adele’s “Someone Like You” (not a shock there), Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again,” and Drake’s “The Motto.”

Now you’re probably wondering how these songs made it to the top 20 spots? Well according to Tiana Lewis, Pandora’s head of pop and R&B programming, the process of picking the top songs was actually quite simple.

“We compiled Pandora’s most popular songs of the decade and year lists using our unique metric—the thumbs up,” she said. “They’re the songs that listeners most actively engaged with and “liked” over and over again…  so basically, all your favorites and your friends’ favorites.”

In addition to dropping the lists for the most popular songs of the decade and the year, Pandora has also rolled out one of its biggest updates to date.

In order to continue playing the songs that listeners most actively engaged with, the new feature has been designed to enhance discovery and give listeners exposure to Pandora’s extensive library of on-demand music.

This includes having a new Moods & Activities section as well as the ability to layer in multiple artists within one radio station.

To coincide with this new component, Pandora now has a Top Thumb Hundred 2019 playlist, as well as one for the entire decade with the Top Thumb Hundred Songs of 2010-2019.

So if you wanted to listen to the biggest songs of the year but didn’t want to go searching for them, Pandora has you covered.
