Patrick Mahomes Smashes 1 of Tom Brady’s Records Days Ahead of Super Bowl 55

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady will be facing off this Sunday in Super Bowl LV.  This isn’t the first time they’ve gone head-to-head. But the result of this game could be a huge factor when it comes to shaping each of their legacies.

Will Brady get his seventh ring? Or will Mahomes be the first QB to win back-to-back titles since Brady did it himself nearly 20 years ago? It’s anyone’s game. But when it comes to one of Brady’s records, Mahomes has already smashed it ahead of Super Bowl LV.

Patrick Mahomes lost to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots 2 seasons ago

Mahomes and the Chiefs went up against Brady and the New England Patriots two seasons ago in the AFC championship game. At the time, Brady was on his quest for a ninth Super Bowl appearance. Mahomes was the new record-shattering MVP playing in just his second NFL season, and his first as a starter.

The game was a thriller, as fans watched Brady lead a touchdown drive in overtime to give the Patriots the 37-31 victory. Two weeks later, Brady and Patriots coach Bill Belichick won the last playoff game they would ever win together when they won Super Bowl LIII.

The next season, Mahomes would go on to win his first Super Bowl title. It was the first championship the Chiefs had seen in 50 years. Mahomes also won the MVP award, making him the youngest quarterback in NFL history to take home the prize.

Tom Brady did an unusual thing after beating the Chiefs

After the Patriots beat the Chiefs in the AFC championship game, Brady did something rather unusual. The future Hall-of-Famer went over to the Chiefs locker room after the game to talk to Mahomes.

“It was affirmation of what I’d been doing the whole year, that I was doing it the right way,” Mahomes later said. “As a young quarterback you don’t understand that. You try to put in as much time and work as possible and try to win as many games as possible, and for him to come talk to me and show me that respect, from Tom, it meant I was doing it the right way.”

Mahomes added that he has a “ton of respect” for Brady and everything he has done during his legendary career.

During recent interviews leading up to Super Bowl LV, Brady has made it clear that he really admires the young Mahomes. He has described the Chiefs QB as a “tremendous player, great leader, and big-time performer.” Brady also noted that Mahomes seems to play his best game when his team needs him the most.

Patrick Mahomes just smashed one of the GOAT’s most recent records

At the age of 43, Brady has played more than 20 seasons in the NFL. And he’s put up such amazing numbers that there’s no argument he’s the GOAT. But, Mahomes is starting to build a dynasty of his own. And he’s already smashing some of Brady’s records.

According to MSN.com, a signed Mahomes rookie card recently sold for $861,000 at auction. This transaction made the football card the most expensive one ever sold.

The previous record was held by Brady’s autographed rookie card with the New England Patriots. Last month, it sold for $555,988 on eBay.

The Mahomes card was a National Treasures #161 card, and was one of just five “Black” copies issued. The auction house that sold the card, Goldin Auctions, considered the card to be exceptionally rare.

Super Bowl LV airs Sunday, February 7 on CBS.
