Patty Jenkins to Direct the ‘Wonder Woman’ Sequel | Here’s When It’ll Hit Theaters

She directed the $800 million grossing summer box office smash Wonder Woman, and now she is coming back to try her hand again. Patty Jenkins is working on the script for the movie’s sequel, Variety reported. Wonder Woman 2 is set to hit theaters Dec. 13, 2019.

“It can’t be a replica or a continuation of the first,” Jenkins told EW in June, when she was already developing the sequel during negotiations. “There’s another great story I want to tell. It is its own movie.” She also confirmed in interviews the sequel would be set in the United States rather than Europe.

Wonder Woman, which hit theaters June 2, became the highest-grossing movie ever directed by a woman. While Jenkins earned a $1 million paycheck for the movie, Jenkins will receive writing and directing fees in the seven-figure range, likely $7 million to $9 million, with a “considerable backend,” according to Hollywood reporter.

Negotiations for Jenkins’ return began soon after Wonder Woman’s first box office weekend, but they dragged on. Actress Gal Gadot, who starred in the first film, will also star in the follow-up.

Wonder Woman is based on the DC Comics character with the same name. It was released by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film is the fourth installment in the DC Extended Universe. In addition to Gadot, it stars Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Connie Nielsen, and Elena Anaya.

Jenkins is also known for writing and directing the 2003 crime drama movie Monster, about a former prostitute who was executed in 2002 for killing six men. She also was involved in two movies which did not make it to fruition, including I Am Superman with Ryan Gosling, a film she recently stated she still hope to make. In addition to movies, Jenkins has also spent time working in television.
