Just when you thought Ant-Man and the Wasp was a refreshingly positive and light Marvel movie, that post-credits scene came along to stomp all over your heart. In it, Hope, Janet, and Hank all disappear in Thanos’ snap, leaving Scott Lang trapped in the Quantum Realm. The end of the credits rubs this in with a piece of text that reads, “Ant-Man and the Wasp will return?”

So what do we know about the answer to that question? What’s next for Ant-Man? Will we see him in Avengers 4?

Luckily, Scott Lang will indeed return for the upcoming Avengers movie. But in case you were worried that he would be sidelined for much of the film, only being rescued from the Quantum Realm at the very end or something like that, it instead seems that Lang will be integral to the plot.

After all, leaked promo art shows Lang as part of the Avengers lineup, which implies he must get out of the Quantum Realm somewhat early in the movie.

In addition, the Russo Brothers, the directors of Avengers: Infinity War, previously teased that the characters who didn’t make it into that movie, namely Ant-Man and Hawkeye, would have a lot more to do in Avengers 4.

“There is a…we have a really interesting story cooked up for both of those characters, and part of that story required that they be under house arrest,” Joe Russo said.

Interesting might be an understatement, as leaked Avengers 4 set photos actually seem to reveal that Ant-Man will travel through time. In the photo below, we see Scott Lang at the Battle of New York from The Avengers along with Captain America, Iron Man, and The Hulk. Everyone is wearing some sort of device on their wrist, which could be what helps them travel through time.

You’ll recall that in the Ant-Man and the Wasp post-credits scene, Janet van Dyne warns Scott not to get sucked into a time vortex, a line of dialogue that made fans who had seen these leaked set photos perk up in their seats.

So it seems like what might happen is that in order to escape the Quantum Realm, Scott Lang enters a time vortex, and this spits him out several years into the future. There had previously been rumors that there will be a time jump between movies; a 16-year-old actress has apparently been cast to play Scott’s daughter, Cassie.

Once Scott has arrived in the future, he can go to Iron Man and share with him the discovery that the Quantum Realm allows a person to travel through time. Then, using the particles Scott obtained, perhaps Iron Man can develop some sort of a time-travel device. From there, the plot of Avengers 4 can be about going back in time, maybe to collect the Infinity Stones and assemble a new Infinity Gauntlet that can be used to defeat Thanos.

Alternatively, some fans have the theory that Scott Lang will go through the time vortex and end up back in the 1990s, where he’ll run into Captain Marvel. When she gets Nick Fury’s message, the two will then jump forward into the future in order to help the gang defeat Thanos. In this scenario, Scott can still tell Tony about his time travel discovery.

Thankfully, then, we won’t have to wait until Ant-Man 3 to see how Scott gets out of the Quantum Realm. He’ll likely return at the very beginning of Avengers 4 and proceed to be a vital part of that movie’s plot.
