Paul Rudd Will Try Out Sci-Fi for Next Big Role
Paul Rudd is continuing to expand outside comedy. Following his leading turn in Marvel’s Ant-Man, the actor has reportedly signed on to star in the long-gestating sci-fi thriller, Mute.
According to Deadline, both Rudd and True Blood‘s Alexander Skarsgard recently boarded Mute, which is set 40 years from today and takes place in the immigrant-filled city of Berlin. The film centers on Leo Beiler (Skarsgard), a mute bartender whose only reason for living there has since disappeared. As Leo’s search for his lost loved one takes him deeper into the city’s underbelly, all clues lead to an odd pair of American surgeons (led by Rudd’s character). But Leo can’t tell if they can help or if they’re to be feared.
The project hails from Duncan Jones, the director of the upcoming Warcraft flick. While Mute won’t be quite on the same scale as that blockbuster, it’s no less ambitious and has been a longtime passion project for the filmmaker. Though Jones has been working to launch the film for several years, the project was shelved for quite some time. But only a few weeks ago, the director hinted that the movie could soon be back on the table. “Fighting like a nut to make it happen. Getting there, but its all in the lap of schedules now,” he wrote. It seems the timing has since been worked out, as Mute is finally taking a major step forward with the addition of two big stars.
“I’ve been working towards making Mute for 12 years now. I cannot tell you how thrilled I am that we’re finally going to shoot this utterly unique film,” Jones said of the casting news. “The fact that I get to make it with Alexander Skarsgard and Paul Rudd makes it all the more exciting! Mute is a film that will last. It is unlike any other science fiction being made today.”
The movie is an interesting choice for Rudd, who has recently been delving outside of the lighter, comedic fare that audiences are used to seeing him in. He earned strong reviews in his first superhero flick as Ant-Man, a role that he’s set to reprise in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War and the planned 2018 sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp. Having conquered the comic book world, it looks like the actor is now ready to take on sci-fi with Mute.
While Mute is certainly one of the most intriguing projects that Rudd has in the works, it’s not the only film he currently has on his roster of upcoming films. The actor is also set to star in the upcoming drama The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving, which is based on the 2012 novel of the same name and is expected to hit theaters sometime next year.
As for when Mute will be released, Jones previously stated he hoped to work on the film before Warcraft hit theaters next June. If the filmmaker is able to complete production on the project by then, it’s likely fans will finally get to see the long-gestating project sometimes as early as next fall or in early 2017.
