Jackie is a single mother struggling to take care of her son, Sammy. Things are tough for Jackie and Sammy. There are times where it seems like Sammy is underfed. During season 1, episode 4, Sammy’s face lights up after he spots a pickle that fell on the floor. He quickly reaches down and eats the pickle. Jackie is also so broke that she and Sammy regularly go to the store to eat samples of the food. Although there’s laughter from the audience when he does this, it’s sad to see how dire their situation is.

Making matters worse, Sammy’s father, Barry, is behind on child support. During season 1, episode 1, we see Jackie yelling at Barry on the phone because he missed another child support payment. His check bounced, so that leaves Jackie struggling to make ends meet.

Javier and Elizabeth decide to set Jackie (and Luis) up on a blind date. Apparently, they think Jackie is lonely and needs some love in her life. She has been focused on taking care of Sammy, so they reason it’s time for her to have a little fun and get back out there. Jackie also spends a lot of her time working at the bar, so that doesn’t leave much opportunity for a social life.

Javier tells Jackie she needs someone to “share her dreams with.” However, Jackie disagrees. She says she doesn’t need to go on a date, and she doesn’t need to share her dreams. “I don’t have time for dreams or dates,” says Jackie. “I’m a single mother and I have enough on my plate.” Javier offers to watch Sammy so that Jackie can pursue a romantic relationship.

It’s possible Jackie is hesitant to date again because she’s afraid she will be disappointed by another man. Barry was unreliable, so she’s likely afraid the next person she meets will break her heart and Sammy’s.

Jackie’s blind date

Elizabeth usually focuses on herself, but this time she takes a moment to help Jackie get ready for her date. She buys her a bagful of items, including a set of false eyelashes. Elizabeth sets Jackie up with Ron, a single dad who drives a pickup truck. Jackie seems excited about the fact that Ron seems laid back like her.

Guest stars in this episode include Winston Story as Charles, Christopher Thornton as Max, Reggie Austin as Ron, Darryl Stephens as Jeremy and Michael Shen as the policeman.

Broke airs Thursdays on CBS at 9:30 p.m. Eastern.
