PBS Unveils ‘Grantchester’ Season 5 Trailer Ahead of June 14 Premiere

Grantchester might look like a bucolic English village, but it’s no Eden, at least according to a dramatic preview for the upcoming fifth season of the PBS mystery series. The public television network unveiled the trailer on April 16.

‘Grantchester’ returns June 14

Grantchester Season 5 premieres June 14 on PBS. Based on the preview, it looks like we can expect some new romantic entanglements, both for Will Davenport (Tom Brittney) and his recently widowed mother, as well as some snarky one-liners from detective Geordie Keating (Robson Green), and, of course, a few murders.

Lauren Carse has joined the cast as journalist Ellie Harding, and the young vicar appears to have caught her eye. But she isn’t that impressed when she learns about his vow of celibacy, teasing him that he should change his name to “Won’t.” (Though later in the trailer, it looks like the two are kissing.)

Meanwhile, Will’s mother Amelia (Jemma Redgrave) has a new man in her life following the death of Will’s father in season 4. But Will is skeptical of the relationship, telling her that her fiancé is a “bully” and that she “deserves better.” And sadly, things don’t seem to be getting any easier for closeted curate Leonard Finch (Al Weaver), who is still struggling to reconcile his sexuality with his faith.

The trailer also promises ‘a deeper mystery’

The trailer also promises “a deeper mystery” on this season of Grantchester. It’s not clear what that involves, but it’s possible the former Mrs. Maguire’s (Tessa Peake-Jones) new husband Jack Chapman (Nick Brimble) plays a role. “If I told you the truth, what good would that have done,” he asks her at one point, suggesting he’s hiding a big secret from his wife.

Whatever the mystery is, it appears to have affected Will deeply, with some footage of him speeding away on his motorcycle and angrily knocking things over.

The new season picks up a year after season 4

The new season of Grantchester picks up a year after the end of season 4. It’s now 1957, the year “Prime Minister Harold Macmillan told the British people that they had ‘never had it so good,’” according to a description from ITV, which airs the show in the U.K . “For many of the residents of Grantchester, it really will feel like they’re in a delightful new Eden, but for all the talk of paradise on earth and faith-in-action, Geordie Keating knows that trouble is never far away.”

In the season’s first episode, a student from a prestigious all-female college is found dead during Spring Ball season. To find her killer, Will and Geordie will have to “infiltrate the murky world of campus politics and university societies.” At the same time, Geordie and Cathy (Kacey Ainsworth) are facing new challenges in their marriage, while Leonard has to adjust to life back at home after a trip to Marrakech with Daniel (Oliver Dimsdale).

Grantchester Season 5 premieres Sunday, June 14 on PBS.
