We begin our journey with the finale of season 1, “Grand Guignol.” In this episode, Vanessa Ives is initially recovering from being possessed by a demon. The only good thing about the whole ordeal was that she had a vision of where her friend Mina Murray would be found: the Grand Guignol theater. So she and her allies race to the theater to find the missing woman.

The next episode we are going to discuss is “Glorious Horrors.” Not only does the title of that episode describe the whole show, but it is a perfect mixture of intense sadness and intense happiness. Sir Malcolm Murray returns from spending the night with Madame Kali only to find out that his wife has died. He does not react properly at all, which concerns his friends.

Meanwhile, Dorian Gray throws a ball and invites everyone. Lily Frankenstein— formerly known as Brona Croft — is a hit, much to the dismay of Victor Frankenstein. Dorian, of course, finds the whole situation amusing.

In the episode “Closer Than Sisters,” Vanessa Ives and Mina Murray’s friendship is revealed through flashbacks as well as details as to why Mina disappeared. Vanessa eventually catches her mother and Sir Malcolm acting intimately, and she reacts badly. She seduces Mina’s fiance, which leads to Mina’s wedding being canceled.

Vanessa starts acting strangely and is eventually sent to an asylum. Then her mother dies and she is reunited with Mina. Mina says that she is married to a lawyer but is under the control of the Master Vampire and asks Vanessa to save her. Mina then disappears, leaving Vanessa heartbroken at which point she seeks out Sir Malcolm.

In the season three premiere, “The Day Tennyson Died,” Vanessa and her allies are separated. Ethan is headed back to America. Sir Malcolm heads to Africa, Victor heads back to his lab, and Vanessa is completely exhausted from fighting Madame Kali and Satan.

All of these episodes are wonderful and will thrill you and give you chills. Definitely check out Penny Dreadful if you’re into the supernatural. You won’t regret it.
