Penny Dreadful fans have something to look forward to: the spinoff, City of Angels is currently in production. Though there have not been many updates about the series so far, there are some things we know. The series is set to feature some stars and some returning actors.

There will be many new faces as well, giving fans more to look forward to if they’re into the new and different. Still, the show will most likely remind fans of the original while remaining unique enough. Without further ado, let’s get into what we know about Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.

Who is returning?

Unfortunately, Eva Green fans are out of luck. The actress will not be returning for the spinoff. However, there will be a familiar face from the original in City of Angels.

Rory Kinnear, who portrayed John Clare/The Creature in Penny Dreadful, will be playing Dr. Peter Craft in City of Angels. According to series creator John Logan, “[Kinnear] is one of [his] favorite actors on the planet, and working with [Kinnear] on the original series was inspiring, so much so that [he] wrote this part for him.” Luckily, the actor was available to return to the Penny Dreadful universe.

What is the ‘Penny Dreadful’ spinoff about?

Described by creator John Logan as a “spiritual descendant” of the original show, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels will follow the lives of several Los Angeles residents as they get entangled with supernatural forces. One such resident will be Tiago Vega, who will be played by Daniel Zovatto, a detective who is investigating a shocking murder. His family will be involved in the story as well.

Vega’s mother, Maria, played by Adriana Barraza, will do everything in her power to keep her children safe from anything that threatens them. Raul, Vega’s brother played by Adam Rodriguez, acts as something of a father figure to his younger sibling Tiago. Vega’s brother Mateo, played by Johnathan Nieves, is a good-hearted but sensitive and vulnerable person. Vega’s sister, Josefina, played by Jessica Garza, is often overlooked but “has a powerful spirit waiting to be unleashed.”

Who else will be in the ‘City of Angels’?

As is mentioned before, Rory Kinnear will be returning to the world of Penny Dreadful. However, this time he will be portraying a German-American doctor, Peter Craft. Craft will be the leader of the group Bund, which is dedicated to keeping the United States away from threats of war in Europe. Craft’s wife, Linda, who will be played by Piper Perabo, is known as “a fading American Beauty rose” and is upset with her husband and tired of her boring suburban life.

Game of Thrones fans may also spot a familiar face in the show. Natalie Dormer will be portraying Magda, a demon who can take on the appearance of anyone, which she will do throughout the story. Shadowhunters fans should also look out as Dominic Sherwood will be portraying Kurt. Sherwood’s character is a driver and bodyguard who is described as having “unexpected depth and a surprising background.”

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels will be a show that fans won’t want to miss. Hopefully the show will live up to the legacy of the original. We think it will.
