The great thing about award shows is you get to find out who wins which award and sometimes see genuine reactions from celebrities. There is one actor’s reaction to his win that is getting a lot of attention from this year’s Emmys.
That would be Jason Bateman of Ozark. Find out what he won and why people are loving his surprised reaction.
Jason Bateman won an Emmy for outstanding directing for a drama series
The actor was personally nominated twice this year for outstanding directing for a drama series and outstanding lead actor in a drama series.
He lost the acting nomination to Billy Porter who won for his performance in Pose. However, the actor did take home the award for directing.
“Wow,” Bateman said to start his speech, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “That is something.” He went on to say, “I’m so lucky to be a part of work, especially as a director.” The director talked about sharing the trophy with the cast, crew, Netflix and his family.
The other nominees in the category were David Benioff and D.B. Weiss for Game of Thrones, David Nutter for Game of Thrones, Miguel Sapochnik for Game of Thrones, Lisa Brühlmann for Killing Eve, Adam McKay for Succession, and Daina Reid for The Handmaid’s Tale.
This is Bateman’s first win after being nominated four times previously. Two of those nominations was for his performance in Arrested Development.
People are loving his initial reaction to his win
When it was announced that Bateman won, the Ozark cast were quick to share their excitement. He seemed to be the last person to believe it. He even said “Wow” before getting up and going on the stage.
One fan made a slow motion video of his reaction. Reese Witherspoon is one of the many people who thought it was a highlight of the night. She tweeted, “Best reaction of the #Emmys2019 goes to @batemanjason.”
Fans also commented on the fellow cast members reacting. “I need friends who are as excited for my achievements as Laura Linney is for Jason Bateman’s. #Emmys,” one person tweeted. Another person tweeted, “This might be the most quintessential Jason Bateman thing I’ve ever seen.”
That wasn’t the only surprising ‘Ozark’ win
Bateman wasn’t the only person from the cast who surprisingly won. The outstanding supporting actress in a drama category was stacked with Game of Thrones stars.
Lena Headey, Maisie Williams, Sophie Turner, and Gwendoline Christie were nominated. Fiona Shaw from Fleabag and Julia Garner from Ozark were the other nominees.
Garner won the award but talked about sharing it in her speech. “This looks kinda like a piece of chocolate, like a candy wrapper … I’m sorry I’m so nervous!” she said according to Page Six. “What I’m saying about the chocolate is I want to give a piece to everybody in my life.”
Bateman also talked about the third season of the show. He teased that the riverboat seen at the end of the last season will go into operation and we’ll catch up with the characters six months later, according to Deadline.
