People Are Obsessed With a Sweater Worn by Chris Evans in ‘Knives Out’
Sweater weather is in full swing and may already be giving way to winter coat weather depending on the location but Chris Evans just won the entire fall season — the official start to winter isn’t until Dec. 21, 2019 — in the new thriller, Knives Out.
Although the film starring Evans, Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis, and more, doesn’t officially hit theaters until Nov. 27, 2019, critics and fans have already started a conversation about what they refer to as “The Sweater,” a cozy cream-colored cable knit sweater Evans’s character, Ransom Drysdale, is seen wearing in the movie.

People professed their love for the sweater on Twitter
When reviews for the movie started coming out before the release of the movie in theaters, people’s love for The Sweater became clear. According to Yahoo Lifestyle, when Anna Menta, a senior film reporter for Decider, mentioned the hero piece of the character’s wardrobe in a review, it set off a larger discussion about just how much people have really fallen for the classic sweater when worn by Evans.
“The only thing I will say about Knives Out is that, upon seeing Chris Evans in a sweater, the girl next to me gasped and said very softly and tenderly, ‘Sweater,’” Menta wrote in a tweet.
In a subsequent tweet, Menta said she “fu****g loved it. The movie and the sweater, both of which were very good.”
Later, Nicole Gallucci, a Culture Reporter for Mashable, came forward and said she had been the person who gasped. She went on to note a particular scene in the movie when Evans sat in front of beer bottles wearing the sweater.
Gallucci tweeted: “IT’S TRUE: There is a scene in Knives Out where Chris Evans is in a freaking cable knit sweater sitting in front of four beer bottles and it’s the hottest thing I’ve ever seen!”
“I famously have no visual imagination but somehow IT IS FOREVER IN MY BRAIN,” she added.
So, go for the movie but stay for The Sweater.
Costume designer for ‘Knives Out’ says the sweater tells a story
Following the conversation about the sweater that made it’s way around the internet, The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Jenny Eagan, the costumer designer for Knives Out.
“I’m not sure if it’s the sweater or who’s wearing the sweater,” Eagan jokingly told the outlet. “That might be part of it, too. He looks pretty great.”
On the origin of the sweater, Eagan said she and Evans chose the sweater during a fitting that happened so quickly she didn’t recall the designer. But she dressed the Evans’s character and the rest of the cast in sweaters because the film’s set in the winter. And the rips in Evans’s sweater that are noticable around the collar? Those are there to reflect the character’s personality and history with his family.
“He just didn’t care…. I imagine it laying on the chair in his bedroom and he just threw it on day after day,” the costume designer said of the character’s sweater. “But giving it little nicks or little holes here and there, meaning he didn’t take care of it…the holes and the tatter gave him a touch of that disrespect.”
Thanks to Evans and Eagan, we know what we’ll be wearing all winter long.
