The start of Pernell Whitaker’s career

Born in a housing project in Norfolk, Virginia, on January 2, 1964, Whitaker began boxing at the age of nine. At 18-years-old, he competed in amateur boxing and won a silver medal in the lightweight division at the 1982 World Championships. He then earned gold medals at the 1983 Pan American Games and 1984 Olympics.

Whitaker went on to win several titles in the lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight, and light middleweight divisions, making him a four-weight world champion. His nickname derives from “Pete,” a name his friends and family gave him. The people in his hometown would chant “Sweet Pete,” and a local sportswriter misinterpreted it to “Sweet Pea,” but it stuck.

In 1989, The Ring magazine and the Boxing Writers Association of America named Whitaker Fight of the Year. Whitaker closed out his career with 46 total fights, 40 wins, 17 wins by knockout, four losses, one draw, and one contest. The talented boxer received the draw in a match versus who he hailed as the best boxer in the world, Julio Cesar Chavez. Several publications, including Sports Illustrated, wrote opinion pieces about why Whitaker deserved the win.

Sports analysts also believed that Whitaker only has two actual losses because the others were highly debated calls. Even though Whitaker is considered a phenomenal boxer, critics thought he could have been the best ever if he had not fallen into cocaine addiction.
